Cruise Throough The Parade!

Time is running out for visiting the 2008 Parade Of Homes at Solterra, located in Lakewood, Colorado. I went this morning with a friend of mine and it was the perfect day - not too hot and not too crowded. It runs through Labor Day, Friday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Saturday, Sunday & Labor Day from 9:00am to 8:00p.m. They do have a refreshment tent and port-a-potties. You can't carry food or drink into the models and no, you can't use the bathrooms, darn!

This parade of homes is said to be the largest walking tour of luxury custom homes in the country. All of the homes were near/in the 2 million dollar range, so you can imagine just how spectacular they are! I enjoyed the uniqueness of each of the eight homes and the different decorating styles. Visitors were flashing their camera's, huddled in groups discussing the features and taking notes galore. Some were enjoying a rest on the patios and taking in the beautiful views of the foothills. Outdoor living space was definitely a strong feature this year, as well as wine cellars and media rooms.

Lots and lots of textures. Brick inside and out, wood floors and tile in all shapes and sizes. The carpets were textured designs with short naps, nothing in a long haired berber. The walls had a nice light texture - some were decorative, but not too much wallpaper. Ceilings had a light texture, some were wood and others were painted in a contrasting color. Interior Decorators had a blast and there were ideas for everyone.

So, go and enjoy!

Best Corn Dogs Around!

What to do this weekend, if you are trying to avoid downtown? How about taking a ride down to Pueblo and visiting the Colorado State Fair. I haven't been to a fair in years!

I used to love going to the fair as a child. Saved up my money for weeks! Dad or Mom would drop us off before the gates would open and we stood in line anxiously awaiting to get in. We had already decided what rides to go on and in which order - trying to beat out the crowds, because all the fun rides had long lines. I didn't like the ones that would spin you in circles really fast, but I remember loving the ferris-wheel, bumper cars, twister, and the saucer. Half the fun was in getting to eat. They had all my favorites, corn dogs with mustard, curly fries, snow cones, cotton candy and soft serve ice cream. We always did the spin art and brought home framed master pieces and tried our best to win prizes at all the booths. And, when we ran out of money and we always did, we would take a walk through the animal barns. We spent the whole day playing and just being kids. I looked forward to going to the fair every year and if I was lucky, I got to go a couple of times. When I got old enough, I had summer jobs there, earning money for school clothes. The saddest thing about the fair, was that the fair was always the signal that summer was over and it was time to go back to school.

The Colorado State Fair runs from 10:00a.m. to midnight nightly, until September 1st.

Where Will You Be During The Democratic National Convention?

If you live in Denver and even if you don't, I'm sure you are well aware that the Democratic National Convention starts on Monday. So, whether you are totally excited or dreading the inconvenience, whether you are a Democrat or not, it's what the local buzz is all about - from who's speaking and when, to what famous people are attending (Oprah) and where they will be staying, to all the special events and activities.

I've spoken to people who are totally immersed and are counting the days, as well as friends and family who plan on working out of their homes just to avoid the congestion. Taxi drivers were given a class on how to conduct themselves, along with the ins and outs of such a large convention. Restuarants have extended their hours and added staff. Businesses are pumping up service in order to offer all the convention attendees a most hospitable Colorado welcome
! Our Mayor, John Hickenlooper, is encouraging all Colorado residents to come and enjoy the experience.

Regardless of interest, there will be some individuals who will choose to get out of town and do other things. Some have actually rented out their homes for the week and will be taking the opportunity to get out of town. However, with so many of the school districts having already started back, that won't be an option for everyone.

Let's start this weekend off with a breathtaking event at Chatfield State Park! At the 2008 Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival you will enjoy the sight of 55 beautiful hot air balloons launching into the skies, but you'll have to get up early. Admission is FREE, but entrance to the State Park is $7.00 per vehicle. Tickets can be purchased at Vitamin Cottage stores and at Oliver's Meat and Seafood on 6th Ave. There will be music and a car show. Visit the 2008 Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival for a schedule of events.

What will you be doing?I thought it would be fun to share with each other some of the fun things that will be going on around town for those who won't be at the DNC.
