Day 82: 100 Days of Central Mass Features Cape Cod Style Homes

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES CAPE COD STYLE HOMES

Cape Cod style homes first originated in the late 1700s and were built by English settlers that came to America. A former President of Yale University, Reverend Timothy Dwight, is credited with coming up with the name "Cape Cod" for this class of home styles.

Cape Cods were modeled after the half-timbered homes in England, but were altered to adapt to the stormy New England weather. They are traditionally 1 - 1 1/2 story homes with a steep roof and side gables. Some capes have dormers that allow extra light, space and storage. They are simple style homes, symmetrical with centered doors and shutters that could be used to protect the house during storms. In the older style capes, the chimney is usually located in the center of the home.

Modern day cape cod style homes have the chimney located off to the side and often times have dormers. Shutters are not functional anymore, but they are still decorative on many of these style homes. They are very popular throughout Central Mass.

Day 81: 100 Days of Central Mass Features Colonial Style Homes

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES COLONIAL STYLE HOMES

The colonial architecture is associated with many different cultural traditions, including English, Spanish, Dutch and French. Colonials found here in Central Mass are stately and symmetrical. They are usually a 2 story rectangular dwelling with bedrooms on the second floor. New England settlers first constructed what is known as Garrison Colonials, colonials that were similar to medieval England homes. They had steep gable roofs, diamond paned windows and unpainted clapboard or wood siding.

Today's colonials are known as Neo-Colonials. Inspired by the original colonial homes, Neo-Colonials mix modern style with classic simplicity and structure. Most are sided with vinyl or brick veneer and have distinguishing features such as pillars and faux shutters. Although the Neo-Colonials differ from the original colonial style, you can still find floor plans and features that have the same comfortable pleasures that owners enjoy.

Day 80: 100 Days of Central Mass Features Pioneer Brewing Company

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES PIONEER BREWING COMPANY

In May of 2004, Todd Sullivan and Tim Daley formed Pioneer Brewing Company in Sturbridge, MA. Previously known as the Hyland brewery operation, the brewery was offered to them from the Damon family. The Pioneer Brewing Company takes pride in being small and always fresh. They brew the finest quality brews around Sturbridge & surrounding. Their dream is to stay small, similar to the breweries in the countryside of Europe where community is just as important as the beer itself.

Both Tim and Todd are graduates of Siebel Institute of Technology, a premier brewing school. They worked along side eachother at Mill City Brewing Company located in Lowell, MA from 1995 - 2003. Checkout their website for hours and events.

Our version of the classic Red Ale style. Brewed with 2 row malted barley and hopped with galena and cascade hop it is medium bodied red and perfectly balanced. 5.25% ABV.

Pioneer Gold
This extra pale ale was first brewed in the Summer of 2002. It is the lightest of our year round beers. It is crisp refreshing and very thirst quenching. Light bodied and easy drinking. 4.50% ABV.

Pioneer Frontier Ale
This is our take on the classic West Coast Ale. It is full bodied with full hop flavor and aroma. A big crisp bold Pale Ale. 6.0 % ABV.

Pioneer Stout
Our version of Stout "No, it is not like Guinness" well except the color. It is black and full of rich roasted barley flavor and aroma. Medium bodied and balanced nicely with Galena hops. 4.75 ABV.

SEASONAL BEERS:

Pioneer Hop Whammy
This is Pioneer's most sought after brew. We grow our own Cascade hops here on the farm and we also have many of our friends and family grow for us. We gather all the hops each year in mid August and brew a beer that we call Hop Whammy. It's full name is actually THE HOPWHAMECEA which stands for Hop Whammy East Coast Export Ale. We shortened it to Hop Whammy so you could say it. Our own proprietary hops are the key feature in this brew. They are thrown into the brew wet and just off the vine. A crisp hop flavor that you have to drink to experience. Unfiltered, refreshing, hoppy and delicious. This one usually comes around September 15.

Pioneer Oktoberfest Lager
A traditional Marzen style lager, dark amber in color, full flavored and delicious.

Pioneer Dark Harvest Ale
This dark rich brew is an English Strong Ale. It is brewed using dark roasted malts and English style hops. This beer hovers in the 9% ABV range and is very delicious to the malty dark beer lovers palate.

Pioneer Bourbon Barrel Double Bock
This rich, dark lager begins its life as a traditional German style double bock, full bodied and malty. After extensive cold conditioning at near freezing temperatures, the beer is transferred to oak bourbon barrels where it ages and mellows. The result is a complex yet complimentary layering of flavor, texture and aroma.

Pioneer Bavarian Wheat Beer
Brewed in the Bavarian tradition using barley and wheat malt, Hallertau hops and a special strain of yeast. Medium bodied, balanced and refreshing.

Day 79: 100 Days of Central Mass Features Micknuck's Fresh Marketplace

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES MICKNUCK'S FRESH MARKETPLACE

Located at 570 Main Street in Sturbridge you will find Micknuck's Fresh Marketplace. It's a small, hometown market with fresh produce, a deli and a reasonable selection of groceries. The produce is priced well, I often make a stop here in addition to going to one of the major grocery stores around.

You can find a selection of fresh pasteries from Francesco's Bakery located in Charlton, MA at Micknuck's. A few of my favorite things to pickup here include cranberry walnut chicken salad at the deli, fresh chocolate chip muffins, fresh fruit and Italian bread.

Micknuck'sis conveniently located on Route 20 near Rovezzi's before you get to rt. 148. Stop in and see what you can find to enjoy!
