The Eau Claire chain includes Lower, Middle, and Upper Eau Claire, plus a few smaller lakes of 80-200 acres that are accessible by smaller boats at most water levels. These include Bony, Pickerel, Robinson, Birch, Schunenberg, Smith, and Sweet. From Lower Eau Claire, the Eau Claire River flows westward, passing just south of Eau Claire Acres. Farther downstream, it joins the Saint Croix at Gordon.
The lakes in the Eau Claire chain tend to be deeper and clearer than most lakes in the area. (Eau Claire, as you may have guessed, is French for “Clear Water.”) In them, you’ll find muskies, walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappies, bluegills, and perch. Here are some vital statistics for the three largest lakes:
· Lower Eau Claire: 802 acres, 7.78 miles of shoreline, maximum depth 41’, 56% greater than 20’ deep, and 4% less than 3’ deep.
· Middle Eau Claire: 902 acres, 11 miles of shoreline, maximum depth 66’, 40% greater than 20’ deep, and 12% less than 3’ deep.
· Upper Eau Claire: 992 acres, 9.93 miles of shoreline, maximum depth 92’, 50% greater than 20’ deep, and 4% less than 3’ deep.
You’ll be located in the heart of a recreational paradise. In addition to the Eau Claire river and chain of lakes, you’ll be close to dozens of other lakes and streams that are great for fishing, boating, paddling, and waterfowling. You’re just minutes from the Brule, the Namekagon, and the Saint Croix Wild and Scenic Riverway.
Nearby, you’ll find trails for ATVing, snowmobiling, biking, hiking, and skiing. The area is great for both road and mountain biking, and is home to events like the American Birkebeiner and Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. You’ll be surrounded by vast areas of public and paper company land that’s open to hunting, hiking, birding, and other recreation.
You can shop for essentials in nearby Barnes, Gordon, or Solon Springs; it’s not much farther to Cable, Hayward, Drummond, or Ashland. It’s about an hour to Superior or Duluth, and about 2 ½ hours to the Twin Cities.
Live in the country, commute to work in the city – Douglas County offers the best of both worlds
View Northwest Wisconsin in a larger map
If your dream is to live in the country, or on a lake, and commute to work in the city, Douglas County in NW Wisconsin offers big woods and many clear, deep lakes within commuting distance to Duluth or Superior.

Highway 53 is a 4-lane freeway that connects Duluth/Superior to Eau Claire. It’s a good road and even in the winter months, the plows and sanding trucks respond immediately to keep travel safe during winter storms.
Many friends and neighbors in the Gordon and Wascott communities work in Duluth; they claim it’s a 45-minute drive without the stress of big-city traffic. I live in Gordon on the St Croix Flowage and frequently drive to Superior and Duluth for business and shopping - 45 minutes.
There are many large lakes within this 45-minute commuting zone including Lake Nebagamon, Upper Lake St Croix, The St Croix Flowage, Whitefish Lake, and even the northern end of the Minong Flowage.
There are many lake homes on the market on these lakes, plus small to medium size lakes within commuting distance to Duluth/Superior. Many properties are offered at an exceptional value.
If you’d prefer a home with some acres, there are also many exceptional properties in the quiet woods to choose from all within commuting distance to Duluth/Superior.
Start your home search on my website by clicking on one of the communities listed on the home page. It's my pleasure to help you find your dream home or cabin.

If you're from Minneapolis/St. Paul, the NW corner of Wisconsin might be closer than you think. And the fastest way to get here is to stay in Minnesota for a while.
First, head north on 35E or 35W. You could take the exit for Saint Croix Falls and Highway 8. Instead, to avoid the towns and traffic between Forest Lake and Saint Croix Falls, continue northward on I35. The freeway may not be scenic, but it sure is fast.
If you're heading for Siren, Spooner, or Stone Lake, take the Highway 70 exit for Grantsburg. Once you cross over into Wisconsin and drive through Grantsburg, just keep heading east.
If you're heading for Danbury, Minong, Hayward, or points beyond, then continue on I35 all the way to Hinckley. Head east on Highway 48; at the Wisconsin border it becomes Highway 77. Although 48 is two lanes, it's wide, open, and straight. Parts of 77 are narrower, but most of it has been straightened and widened dramatically in the past few years. If it's been a while since you tried this route, you'll be amazed at the difference. Still, if you're driving up in the evening, keep an eye out for deer.
(My husband and I live near Gordon; this is the route we take to the Cities. We can usually make it in around 2½ hours.)
Would you ever want to drive all the way to Duluth, and then loop back down into Wisconsin? Only if you're heading for the far northwestern corner of the state. I'd probably suggest the Duluth-Superior Hwy 2 route.
The bottom line? Northwestern Wisconsin just might be closer than you think. Check out my area listings at www.JeanHedren.com
