INDIANA Renters; Did you know that ...
You may be able to deduct up to $2,500 of the rent paid on your Indiana home.
You may be able to take this deduction if:
Your "principal place of residence" is the place where you have your true, fixed, permanent home and where you intend to return after being absent.
Rent paid for summer homes or vacation homes is not deductible.
You cannot claim the renter's deduction if the rental property was exempt from Indiana property tax. Examples of this type of property are:
How much rent can I take off? You can deduct up to $2,500 or the amount of rent paid, whichever is less.
Example: Emily paid $4,800 in rent on her principal residence. She will claim a $2,500 renter's deduction.
Example: Bill paid $400 in rent at his first apartment, moved to another location and paid $2,300 for the remainder of the year. His deduction will be limited to $2,500 even though he paid $2,700 altogether.
Get Information Bulletin #38 for more information about this deduction or visit them online to download the bulletin directly from their website: http://www.in.gov/dor/3799.htm#renter.
Do You Need Help Covering The Rising Cost To Heat Your Home?
Indiana's Energy Assistance Program provides financial assistance to low-income households to maintain utility services during the winter heating season. During cold winter months, this program helps prevent utility companies from shutting off home heating service to low-income families. During hot summer months, the Energy Assistance Program provides limited funds for the purchase of fans, distributed at the local level.
Visit The OUCC Lifeline/Link-Up Website for Income Requirements, Applications and Information related to Telephone Service and United Way of Central Indiana for the Winter Assistance Fund.

Do You Need HELP Winterizing Your Home?
Indiana's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides residential energy conservation services to the low income citizens of Indiana. Funding comes from Federal sources and is allocated to Community Action Agencies (CAA) to provide services in each of Indiana's 92 counties. The CAAs use their own crews or private contractors to provide comprehensive energy conservation services. A thorough evaluation of the structure, including the safe and efficient operation of the furnace and water heater, is included in the treatment of each home.
Visit The IHCDA Community Action Agencies Website for Eligibility Requirements, Applications and Information.
