Gentryville is located about six miles north of Chrisney on Highway 231 and is intersected by County Road 1500 North.

James Gentry will forever be remembered in Spencer County. Not only did he and his family pioneer an unsettled wooded area of southern Indiana, but his name forever will be attached to the village he settled -- Gentryville.

Gentry settled down in west-central Spencer County in 1818. The site of his home is commemorated by a historical marker just east of present day Gentryville.

Gentryville is ideally situated between three nationally known historical sites -- Lincoln State Park and Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial to the east and Col. William Jones House to the west.

Dale is located 18 miles north of Rockport on Highway 231.

Along with Rockport, Dale is a center of commerce and community activities in Spencer County.

The town of more than 2,000 is home to several dozen businesses and will probably be growing by leaps and bounds in coming years.

The town is in the process of annexation and is looking at investing in extending services to a larger area to the west, east and north of town.

In the northeast corner of the county, Dale was a relative late bloomer. Although the first pioneers of the area were living on and working the land prior to 1820 (there was even a log cabin school at that time), the town was not officially organized until 1843. the town was first named Elizabeth, but later renamed after Robert Dale Owen, then a member of the U. S. Congress.

The town had grown to about 1,000 by 1960 and was a vital center of commerce, trade, community events and education for surrounding areas.

Today, the town bustles with industry and service sector jobs.

Dale is ideally situated close to Interstate 64 and is already experienced significant commercial growth near I-64. One new hotel, the Baymont Suites, is already open for business, even through construction began in late spring. Another hotel, which broke ground in the summer, is nearly completed.

1. Lincoln State Park - Established in 1932 and one of the oldest State Parks in Indiana.
2. Lincoln's Boyhood Home - Lincoln himself lived in Spencer County Indiana from 7 to 21 years of age, his mother and sister are buried here. (years 1816 to 1930)

The Lincoln Pioneer Village Museum includes hundreds of artifacts from the area's historic past including a hutch made by Abraham Lincoln's father. Located next to the museum is the historic Lincoln Pioneer Village, consisting of cabins that are replicas from the Lincoln era in Spencer County. This is truly a memorable journey & one I have taken personally with my children; it's amazing & worth adding to your vacation travel plans!
