Labor Day Weekend 2008 Activities & Events

It's that time of year again - school is back in session, the weather is beginning to cool off and the holidays are going to creep up on us like every year! Before you get out those shopping bags, Labor Day Weekend has presented itself, signaling the end of summer, along with some wonderful forms of family fun in Downtown Greenville, so save the barbecuing for Monday, get out of the house and head towards Downtown Greenville!

The USA Cycling Championships are back in association with the Greenville Hospital System and The Palmetto Peloton Project (P3). In addition to the races, there will be a slew of activities for everyone to enjoy! Two of the events net proceeds will go to promote cancer research and advocacy.

Events & Entertainment take place between Saturday August 30th at 8:00 AM ending around 10:00 PM, beginning again on Sunday at 7:30 AM and wrapping up at 6:00 PM.

Below is a rundown on the events this weekend:

Stars and Stripes Challenge 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run*:

Saturday, August 30th @ 8:00 AM (2 hours) located at Clemson University's new ICAR! (((Not in Clemson)))

From downtown Greenville on Highway 123 / Academy Street, turn toward Columbia, SC on Highway 385 and follow instructions below. Approx 12 miles from downtown Greenville, SC Click here for additional directions

"Greenville Rocks" Concert*:

Saturday, August 30th @ 6:00 PM (4 hours)

Located at the Peace Center Amphitheater in Downtown Greenville

This concert is FREE with music by StoneEcho!

Stars and Stripes Challenge Bicycle Ride:

Sunday, August 31st @ 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Recreational ride on the same road course as the pros!

* Benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Greenville Hospital System Oncology Research Institute


BI-LO Family Activity Zone*:

Sunday, August 31st @ 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Located in Falls Park on the Reedy (Downtown Greenville)

Family Zone will have an inflatable obstacle course, a magician, face painting, and an artist who can create "Fair Hair" and more!

Family Fun Ride:

Sunday, August 31st @ 10:00 AM (2 hours)

Beginning in Cleveland Park

Associated with the Stars and Stripes Challenge & FREE for participants


USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship:

Sunday, August 31st @1:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Start @ 1:00 PM and Finish between 4-5:00 PM will be in downtown Greenville.

110+ miles include 10 downtown laps

FREE downtown health & wellness expo during the race

FREE for spectators


POWERade Kid's Bike Races:

Sunday, August 31st @ 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM

Located in Downtown Greenville

Start & Finish at the same place as the pros!

FREE participation (parents are allowed on course)
