One of the easiest ways to Reduce your Spring Texas property taxes is by filing for your homestead exemption. The homestead exemption removes part of the assessed value of your property from taxation and thus lowers your taxes. The assessed value of your home is the value placed on your home by either the Harris or Montgomery County for the purposes of determining your local property taxes.
The three types of homestead exemptions, which you may be eligible for are general homestead, over 65 homeowner, and homeowner with disability.
In order to qualify for the homestead exemption:
The main thing to remember is even if you qualify for the homestead exemption you will not automatically receive it. You must file an application for residential homestead exemption by April 30th of the tax year in order to receive the exemption for the year.
Don't be mislead in thinking that you don't have to file for a homestead exemption because the Spring Texas home that you purchased already had a homestead exemption. That homestead exemption went with the previous owners. You need to file for your own general homestead exemption in order to reduce your property taxes.
Its easy to file. You don't have to pay anyone to do it for you. It is only a one page form. Reduce your property taxes today by filing for either the Harris County Homestead Exemption or the Montgomery County Homestead Exemption.
Paul Bettencourt, the Harris County tax assessor-collector, said that less than 50%of the Houstonians who qualify for a homestead exemption file for it and thus never receive the tax break they are entitled to. Don't let yourself become part of this statistic.
