The 53rd Annual Coastal Carolina Fair is Almost Here!

Just a couple more days and it'll be here! Five days to be exact!

The Coastal Carolina Fair always comes around Halloween for us. So that gives the kids a great opportunity to strut their costumes a little longer or take part in the pumpkin contests!53rd Annual Coastal Carolina Fair

This year the fair is celebrating their 53rd year. The gates will open on Thursday, October 29th at 3pm for ten fun-filled days!

What's really cool is that there is entertainment every single night the fair is open. The first night will feature Paul Revere & the Raiders. Some of the other performances that we'll have a chance to see are James Gregory, Lady Antebellum, Percy Sledge, Tracy Byrd, Neal McCoy, The Lettermen, Julianna Hough, Jake Owen and Chairman of the Board. And fireworks are every night as well!

And then there's the rides! There are so many great rides every year, for adults and kids alike. You can get a hand-stamp every night for one low price and rides all the rides as much as you want.

Advanced tickets are on sale right now at all area Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. The advanced price is $6 for ages 13+, $4 for ages 6-12, and kids 5 and under are free. After opening day, you can purchase tickets at the gate for $8 for ages 13+ and $5 for ages 6-12.

You can also get advanced hand-stamp tickets for $17, but if you want to wait and get them at the fair it will cost you $20.

One of the best qualities of the Coastal Carolina Fair is that all of the proceeds stay right here in the Lowcountry. They have donated millions to local charities throughout the years. A few of the recipients have been the Ronald McDonald House, as well as various senior, youth, and community outreach programs.

So are you ready?! Just a few short weeks and the wait will be over. But the fun only lasts for 10 event-filled days, so be sure to make your plans now to get out to the fair!

Second Annual Pajama Run to Benefit MUSC

Have you ever been to a pajama party? Well, this is sorta like that, with a little twist.

The Second Annual Pajama Run hosted by Knology is almost here! This 5K run will be held this Sunday, October 25, 2009. And it all benefits the Medical University of South Carolina's Hollings Cancer Center.

Second Annual Pajama Run

The whole reason this race came to being was to bring more awareness to cancers that happen below the waist, including ovarian, testicular, prostate, bladder, and colon cancer. Their website states, "According to the American Cancer Society:

  • Over 15,000 women will die this year from ovarian cancer.
  • There will be an estimated 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer reported this year.
  • Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. "

Those are some scary numbers, but thankfully there are events like this to raise money and awareness for a very worthy cause.

The race begins and ends at the Joe Riley Stadium with a Pajama Party right after the run. They'll even be awarding prizes for the best pjs as well as the fastest times.

If you'd like to take part, then just click on the picture above to head on over to their website and register. But hurry because it's almost here!

Lowcountry Trees for Humanity 2009

Soon it will be time to plant a tree for humanity. Oh, why not plant two or three.

On October 24th, people in 128 different countries will come together to reduce their carbon footprints.planting a tree photo by alexindigo on Flickr.com

We in the Lowcountry will be part of that movement with the local Trees for Humanity project. The local participants are both the Sea Island and East Cooper Habitat for Humanity.

The Sea Island Habitat for Humanity will be hosting a tree planting from 9 am to 12 pm at Brownswood Place, which will include the planting of 33 mature live oaks, more than 30 oak seedlings, and interactive educational activities for everyone.

East Cooper Habitat for Humanity will also be planting native trees at their McAdams Court site at the same time.

You can stop by either community to take part in the festivities surrounding these tree plantings. Everyone is welcome to come out. There is no cost with either event, but there is plenty to learn!
