Jim Buie is franchise owner/operator of Dryer Vent Wizard (DVW), Dry Clothes, Safe Homes, a home service franchise based in Northeast NC. Jim purchased the rights to franchise DVW in September 2006.
Dryer Vent Wizard specializes in dryer fire prevention and "urgent response" dryer and vent maintenance, repair, replacement and alterations. DVW services keep dryers functioning properly, prevents dryer fires and reduces energy costs.
Prior to becoming a Dryer Vent Wizard franchisee, Buie was employed with Piedmont Natural Gas as District Manager, Tarboro Operations.
He was also an employee of North Carolina Natural Gas Corporation in Fayetteville, NC for 24 years until the company was purchased by Progress Energy in 1999. Jim worked in the Information Services department in various capacities over the years and was serving as VP-Information Systems at the time of the buy out.
Following his departure from NCNG, he moved to Wilmington, NC to attend UNC-Wilmington where he studied international business and Spanish.
Following graduation in 2002, after a brief time in banking, Buie was again employed by NCNG in the Wilmington Operations office. In 2003 shortly after Jim returned to NCNG, it was purchased by Piedmont Natural Gas. Jim served in Wilmington until being transferred to Tarboro, NC 2004 as District Manager. In 2006, Piedmont downsized and deleted the position of District Manager. They offered early retirement to certain individuals and Jim accepted the package. He retired from Piedmont on June 30, 2006.
Buie began looking for a new career shortly after retirement and considered several options. One of the reasons he decided on Dryer Vent Wizard was because he was a volunteer firefighter for over 10 years. He knows first hand the importance of keeping dryer vents lint free. He recalls several homes being damaged by dryer fires. Buie has recently contacted his state representative seeking stricter enforcement of the rules governing the installation of dryer vents.
He met his wife, Maria Elena in Wilmington where they married in 2002. Elena is co-owner of the franchise and trained with Jim in Detroit and Boston. Jim has 2 sons and 3 grandchildren. Jim speaks Spanish and loves to travel.

Q: How did Dryer Vent Wizard originate?
A: Dryer Vent Wizard was founded by David Lavalle, (also founder of the Mr. Handyman franchise) in 2004 in Boston, Massachusetts. The concept was created to meet the "urgent response" need of consumers who were dealing with clothes dryer problems. These problems were a result of dryer vent lint accumulation causing dryers to function inefficiently or not at all. The business originated as a result of finding no one specializing in this type of work.

A: Time is a precious commodity for most people today.
