Hawaii Green Job Growth

While Hawaii's unemployment rate is lower than the national average by a few percentage points, the recent boost in tourism doesn't seem to be causing any change. That's why news on an expansion in the "green"job sector over the next two years is so welcome. According to the state's Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR), there will be a 26 percent boost which equates to 14,000 new jobs.

To dig a little deeper into this statistic so we understand what it really means, it helps to know what exactly constitutes a "green" job. According to the DLIR, a "green" job is any that is related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. So that includes solar, hydropower, geothermal, and wind energy, among others. Some of this growth is already evident on Maui. Solar is beginning to boom in certain parts of the island, such as North Shore real estate, which includes an ever-growing number of Haiku homes with solar power. In the report, there are also larger categories within the sector, such as construction, agriculture and professional resources.

Haiku Boys and Girls Club Benefit at Flatbread

Flatbread Co. will be generously hosting a benefit dinner on Tuesday, December 28th on behalf of the Haiku Boys and Girls Club. A portion of the night's pizza sales will be donated to the club for youth excursions and program supplies. The benefit will take place between 5-10pm.

There are some nice perks involved in participating. First of all, Flatbread serves delicious food in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Second of all, you'll be doing a service to the keiki, and therefor the community, just by eating pizza. Sounds like a good excuse to get together with friends or family and have a fun evening!

Each chapter of The Boys and Girls Club of America is responsible for its own fund raising to stay afloat, and those chapters strive to attain most of their funds through individual donations. Getting help via a benefit like this is a great opportunity for them. The mission of this organization is, "To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens."

Maui's Bob Nakasone the Quiet Hero

Last week, the Maui Memorial Medical Center's Kahului Tower was renamed after a humble lawmaker who lost the fight against lung cancer exactly two years previously. The new title is The Representative Bob Nakasone Kahului Tower. Nakasone received this honor because he was involved in $90 million worth of improvements for the medical center, Kula Hospital, and the Lanai Community Hospital.

What stood out about Nakasone wasn't just about his success in benefiting others, it was also about how deeply modest he was about that success. He brought about great things, but remained an ever faithful and humble servant of the community. In fact, it is generally agreed that he would have certainly have shied from such a grand and public honor as this.

Wesley Lo, Maui Memorial's chief executive officer was quoted saying, "Bob Nakasone was instrumental in expanding the health care needs of Maui by helping us secure funding for the Kahului Tower and other important projects."
