Trail of Lights Festival in Austin Texas
The Trail of Lights Festival is an annual Austin holiday tradition and celebration held in Zilker Metropolitan Park, 2100 Barton Springs Rd. The festival, originally known as Yule Fest, began in 1965 by Mrs. Alden Mabel Davis and then Parks and Recreation Director, Beverly Sheffield, as a holiday gift from the Parks and Recreation Department to the citizens of Austin and visitors. The first display, "The Twelve Days of Christmas", was set up in Zilker Park. This display still holds a prominent location on the Trail this year and has become a big part of the deep tradition of the Trail.
Opening night for the Trail is December 14th 2009 and starts with a parade at 6:30 pm.

Austin is putting together a plan to have zero trash in the future.
There are a few cities that are starting or have started the plan such as Seattle and San Francisco.
Austin hired a company from California to help in this process. They want to accomplish this by reusing and recycling everything and put nothing in a land fill.
Austin's main goal is to reduce the amount of trash to 20 percent per capita by 2012. Austin is trying to get to zero waste by 2040.
