4th ANNUAL MAUI KŌ'IE'IE FISHPOND BENEFIT 5K FUN RUN

The race will start at 8 a.m. at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary on South Kihei Road. Traveling south to Mā'alaea along South Kihei Road, the race will turn by the Lahaina/Kahului intersection and head back to the Sanctuary giving runners a 1.5 beach run. Since 1996 the community has come together to help restore the Kō'ie'ie Fishpond, which has a long history. Join the fun run this Saturday, or click on this link to the Maui Fishpond to find other ways in which you can help. Mahalo.

MAUI PUBLIC FIREWORKS DISPLAY--2012

FireworksWelcome in the New Year while watching a dazzling fireworks display. The Grand Wailea Resort will host the only public show this year on Maui. Join us on the beach at midnight, although the view will be great from many places in the South Maui area.

Thinking about having your own private fireworks? Remember that Maui County requires a permit for all fireworks not considered "novelty". "Novelty", as defined on their website are: "sparkler, snakes, fountains and cylindrical or cone fountains which emit effects not higher than 12 foot off the ground."

Fireworks permits went on sale last Thursday, December 22, and will continue until Saturday, December 31. A single permit is good for 5,000 firecrackers and costs $25 each. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to buy a permit. A list of locations selling permits, as well as those stores selling permitted fireworks, can be found on the Maui County website (http://www.co.maui.hi.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=3115) or by calling the Maui County Fire Prevention Bureau at 808.244.9161.

Please note that fireworks can only be set off between the hours of 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve and 1 a.m. on New Year's Day. To review all the rules and regulations, as well as safety reminders, please follow the above link.

Have a very safe and Happy New Years as we welcome in 2012.

"A PINT FOR A PINT"--BLOOD BANK OF HAWAII--MAUI

Baskin-Robbins ice creamLet's extend the holiday spirit of giving a few days beyond Christmas by assisting the Blood Bank of Hawaii. They are even "sweetening" the deal with their "Pint-for-a-Pint" promotion. Simply donate a pint of blood between December 26 and December 29 and you will receive a coupon valid for a pint of ice cream from any participating Baskin-Robbins store.

The need for blood does not diminish over the Holidays. Travel away from the island and busy schedules means fewer donors. Can you find an hour to donate blood and help others in the week ahead?

Simply make your way to Maui Economic Opportunity at 99 Mahalani Street in Wailuku during the days and hours listed below. The Pint-For-A-Pint program will be held in Classrooms 1 and 2 of this facility.

December 26--10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

December 27--7 a.m. until 2:45 p.m.

December 28--9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

December 29--7 a.m. until 2:15 p.m.

  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Have a valid photo ID with birth date
  • Are at least 18 years old (or 17 years old with signed Blood Bank parent/legal guardian consent form)

WAILEA COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION--9TH ANNUAL TOY DRIVE

Even with Santa's elves working double time this year, there still may not be enough toys for all the needy children in Maui County. So, it's time to don your elf suit and give Santa a hand.

Wailea Community Association Toy drive drop boxFor south Maui residents, the Wailea Community Association is hosting its 9th Annual Keiki Kalikimaka Toy Drive. You can donate a new, unwrapped toy in any of their designated "red brick chimney" drop boxes. These boxes are located in the Wailea Fire Station on Kilohana Street, the Wailea Community Association offices in the Hotel Wailea at 555 Kaukahi Street, and in the lower level courtyard of The Shops at Wailea (where the photo on the right was taken). Also look for drop boxes in the lobbies of Wailea resort hotels.

The Wailea Community Association works with the Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui, which distributes the donated toys. Each year this organization receives requests for toys from more than 25 agencies and they will look to fulfill those requests with the toys they receive. If you'd like to help but don't want to deal with the crowded stores, you can follow this link (www.mauicjc.org) to make a financial contribution. Your donation will be used to buy a toy for a child in need.

People often wonder what are the best toys to donate. I say whatever moves your heart. Take a child with you to the store--he or she will pick the perfect gift! Short of that, if you'd like some ideas then consider gifts like: sports equipment, board games, backpacks, art supplies, craft kits or supplies, dolls, building blocks, cars or trucks, and science kits.

Let's make Christmas for every child in Maui County a special event this year.
