DECEMBER'S SEASON OF CELEBRATING AND SHARING--TOY RUN PARADE, DECEMBER 18, 2011

Toy RunThe Maui Chapter of the Street Bikers United of Hawaii will host its 10th annual Toy Run Parade to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots program. The parade will be held on Sunday, December 18, at 11 a.m. It will travel from Kahului to the Lahaina Cannery Mall and return around 2 p.m. to Carrie & Eddie's Hideaway. The Hideaway is located at 500 North Puunene Avenue.

Assembly for the parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the Wal-Mart in Kahului. Riders should bring a new, unwrapped toy for a child or make a financial contribution to the program.

Join the festivities at the Hideaway after the race. Tickets are $20 and include an ono meal and a raffle ticket for a door prize. There will also be live entertainment, raffles, photo opportunities and commemorative merchandise for sale. To purchase tickets, please go to the Street Bikers United Maui Chapter's website.

If you are not familiar with the Toys For Tots program, it has a very interesting history. It was founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, a Marine Reservist on weekends and the Director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers in civilian life. It was his wife's idea, after she made a doll and Bill could not find an organization that would donate it to a needy child. The trial program that Bill started with his fellow reservists was so successful that in 1948 the Marine Corps adopted it and expanded it nationally. Bill Hendricks used his contacts to enroll numerous celebrities to support the program. Walt Disney designed the original logo, below, still being used today. The primary goal of Toys For Tots is "to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens."

Join the Toy Run Parade on December 18 and help bring this message to the children of Maui County. Toys For Tots logo

DECEMBER'S SEASON OF CELEBRATING AND SHARING--ANGEL TREES

How would you like to play Santa during this Holiday Season? It's very easy to do. Central Pacific Bank, in partnership with The Salvation Army has set up Angel Trees throughout Maui. All you have to do is stop by your lAngel Treeocal tree and select an Angel Tag with the wishes of one person on it. Purchase a gift for that person, and return the unwrapped gift along with the Angel Tag to the original Angel Tree location. This program benefits both children and the elderly on Maui so you may choose who you wish to buy for.

And, you don't have to stop with just one gift--select another Angel Tag and you can play Santa again. The photo to the right is the Angel Tree in Queen Kaahumanu Mall, and as you can see it still has a number of Angel Tags on it. And there are more trees across the island. You will find them at:
  • Central Pacific Bank locations
  • The K-Mart Store in Kahului
  • Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center
  • The Walmart in Kahului
  • The Walmart in Lahaina
  • Lahaina Baptist Church
  • Lahaina United Methodist Church

In additional, all Central Pacific Bank locations will accept any new, unwrapped toys and/or financial contributions to this program. The Salvation Army will then match those gifts to Angel Tags. Toys, gifts and financial contributions will be collected until Sunday, December 18.

Please, let's not have any Angels' wishes go unanswered this Holiday Season.

DECEMBER'S SEASON OF CELEBRATING AND SHARING--ST. NICK'S PET PICS

Santa PawsShouldn't your pet have an opportunity to meet with Santa and put in his/her wish for doggy treats, catnip or a new favorite toy? The Maui Humane Society along with several other non-profit animal groups believe so!

Bring your pet to Queen Kaahumanu Center on Monday night, December 12, between 6 and 8 p.m. Photos will be taken of your pet with Santa and your pet will receive a special treat. If your pet really wants to be in the spirit of the holiday season, festive animal costumes will be available for the photos, too. Same-day photos will be available as well as photo packages.

Please stop by and visit the animal organizations who will there that evening. They will provide information on the care and training of your pets and have many pet items for sale. All proceeds from sales will benefit these groups, which helps all the animals on Maui.

If you don't have a pet or can't be at the Mall on Monday evening, you certainly can assist the Maui Humane Society with a personal contribution. They have a Holiday Giving Tree, and even a contribution of just $5 will help provide treats and toys for pets. Here is the entire Giving Tree (don't you just love the picture of that rabbit?): Maui Humane Society Holiday Giving Tree 2011

DECEMBER'S SEASON OF CELEBRATIONS & SHARING--I WILL WORK FOR FOOD FOOD DRIVE

I was inspired by Christian Quiero's post I Will Work for Food. In case you have not read it, he decided to donate his home staging consultation time during the month of December in exchange for the client making a suitable contribution to the local food bank. I was intrigued by the idea. I'm already very familiar with the Maui Food Bank since I personally contribute to it, but I began to wonder what more I could do. After contacting the Maui Food Bank and gaining a better understanding of their needs I decided the best thing I could do was to help them get additional food or financial donations.

So, I decided to become a one-woman food drive, and "borrowing" Christian's idea, I am also going to work for food during the month of December. I will make this announcement at the weekly Real Estate Association of Maui Caravan meeting this morning. Then over the next few days I am going to distribute the flyers to all the Real Estate offices from North Kihei to Wailea.

I have been very blessed in my life and I would like to share my blessings. I believe that one person can make a difference, but one person working with a large group of people can make a major impact. I am committed that no one in Maui County is hungry during this Holiday Season. Here is my flyer: Will work for Food

DECEMBER'S SEASON OF CELEBRATING AND SHARING--Maui Food Bank--"Hunger Never Takes a Holiday"

maui food bank logo'Tis the Season of Sharing. While that makes many of us think of heading to the mall and buying gifts for friends and loved ones, stop for a moment and consider those who may not even have a decent meal during the Holiday Season--or for that matter--most of the rest of the year.

Here on Maui, the non-profit Maui Food Bank works tirelessly to make certain that does not happen. With it's 62 participating agencies, it currently serves over 10,000 people a month.

During the Holiday Season the Food Bank distributes over 8,000 pounds of food each day, up from 7,000 pounds a day during the rest of the year. The numbers are just staggering. How do they make this happen? In addition to the many businesses, restaurants, and farmers donating food, they count on the generosity of individuals to help meet their needs. We need to step it up, however, as the Maui Food Bank still has not met its quota this year for it's "holiday list" which includes hams, green beans, fruit, stuffing and pie filling.

Unfortunately, in our busy lives, we may have every good intention to donate and then the moment slips away. Now there are several options to help--some without even leaving your home. Simply follow this link to the Maui Food Bank "Get Involved" page and you will have the option of making a one-time financial donation to the Food Bank or an on-going monthly contribution to the Kids Cafe Child Sponsorship Program.

Food drop offIf you do decide to use the more conventional method of making a food donation, then take your items to any of the designated Food Donation Barrels. Drop-Off locations include all American Savings Banks, (like this one inside of the Wal-Mart in Kahului), Maui County Fire Stations, or Maui Food Bank holiday food drive locations. Of course, you can always donate directly to the Maui Food Bank, which is located at 760 Kolu Street in Wailuku.

Another simple option is to stop in at your local Safeway store where you Safeway food donationcan purchase a pre-bagged assortment of food for $10. After checkout you can immediately place the bag in the Donation Barrel at the front of the store.

It seems to me that 10,000 people a month--many of them children--is a very large number for our small community. Working together we can make sure that no one goes hungry during this holiday season--or the rest of the year!
