'Tis the Season of Sharing. While that makes many of us think of heading to the mall and buying gifts for friends and loved ones, stop for a moment and consider those who may not even have a decent meal during the Holiday Season--or for that matter--most of the rest of the year.
Here on Maui, the non-profit Maui Food Bank works tirelessly to make certain that does not happen. With it's 62 participating agencies, it currently serves over 10,000 people a month.
During the Holiday Season the Food Bank distributes over 8,000 pounds of food each day, up from 7,000 pounds a day during the rest of the year. The numbers are just staggering. How do they make this happen? In addition to the many businesses, restaurants, and farmers donating food, they count on the generosity of individuals to help meet their needs. We need to step it up, however, as the Maui Food Bank still has not met its quota this year for it's "holiday list" which includes hams, green beans, fruit, stuffing and pie filling.
Unfortunately, in our busy lives, we may have every good intention to donate and then the moment slips away. Now there are several options to help--some without even leaving your home. Simply follow this link to the Maui Food Bank "Get Involved" page and you will have the option of making a one-time financial donation to the Food Bank or an on-going monthly contribution to the Kids Cafe Child Sponsorship Program.
If you do decide to use the more conventional method of making a food donation, then take your items to any of the designated Food Donation Barrels. Drop-Off locations include all American Savings Banks, (like this one inside of the Wal-Mart in Kahului), Maui County Fire Stations, or Maui Food Bank holiday food drive locations. Of course, you can always donate directly to the Maui Food Bank, which is located at 760 Kolu Street in Wailuku.
Another simple option is to stop in at your local Safeway store where you
can purchase a pre-bagged assortment of food for $10. After checkout you can immediately place the bag in the Donation Barrel at the front of the store.
It seems to me that 10,000 people a month--many of them children--is a very large number for our small community. Working together we can make sure that no one goes hungry during this holiday season--or the rest of the year!
