Her-story or His-story? Writing to her husband, John, Abigail Adams penned a letter asking him to "remember the ladies" as he, Thomas Jefferson and other committee members crafted the Declaration of Independence. An early women's rights promoter, it was Abigail's fervent hope that women's independence and civil rights would be provided for in this document.
With two events scheduled for March, American Independence Museum explores the lives of Colonial era women and their impact on history with "living theater," both beginning at 7pm in the Folsom Tavern at 164 Water Street in Exeter, NH
On March 14th, meet Paul Revere's mother-in-law, Mrs. Rachel Walker, portrayed by Kate Carney, historian and actress, as she re-creates life in Boston before, during and after the Revolution. Kate's performance includes an interactive depiction of Colonial frustration with the British pre-Revolution taxes leading up to the Declaration of Independence.
On March 28th, Diann Strausberg of the Storied Past, will portray Mrs. Phebe Emerson Ripley, Ralph Waldo Emerson's grandmother. Mrs. Ripley, a Concord Massachusetts resident, watched the dramatic beginnings of the Revolutionary War from her home near North Bridge in April 1775. Her husband, Reverend Ripley, became a chaplain for the Continental Congress and local militia, and died while serving in Vermont just 6 months later.
Located at 164 Water Street in Exeter, The Folsom Tavern is part of the American Independence Museum campus. Both "Remember The Ladies" event start at 7pm. Adult admission is $5 and $3 for students and museum members. Educators and students are eligible for Certificates of Attendance.
Occupying two historic buildings, the Ladd-Gilman House and Folsom Tavern on the same campus, it is the mission of American Independence Museum to connect America's Revolutionary past with the present. CASA is a national organization of volunteers who advocate in our court system for abused and neglected children all across our country. In New Hampshire alone, 1000 children each year are victims of physical or sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA volunteers have direct involvement in the courts to help these children find the respite they need. As a volunteer, each CASA Guardian ad Litem (GAL) works only in "the best interest of the child" and the court system appreciates and respects CASA's recommendations.
Of course, the need for resources far exceeds the volunteers and financial capacity available. If you are interested in becoming a CASA GAL, or would like to help in any way please visit http://www.casaforchildren.org/ or in New Hampshire http://www.casanh.org/
I am very proud of the work done by my wife Chris as a CASA GAL and her many CASA associates here in New Hampshire I have come to know and respect over the years. This is truly a worthwhile organization.

Hampton NH 2011 Christmas Parade
On Saturday December 3rd, the town of Hampton NH held another fantastic Christmas Parade, themed, "Hampton...One Beautiful Town." Most feel this was the best parade ever in Hampton history, and with good reason.
An annual event for over ten years, Hampton suspended the parade in 2007. Three years later Hampton revived the tradition in 2010 with even more colorful floats and marchers than ever. Last years parade lasted about 1 1/2 hours, beginning south of the railroad bridge on Route 1 and ending at Center School on Winnacunnet Road, a distance of about two miles.
This years parade route was the same, but the entire show lasted almost 3 hours. Many fire companies, from as far away as Durham, were represented, along with law enforcement, marching bands, antique autos, floats and Winnacunnet High School athletes. The crowd thronging the sidewalks was estimated to be over 10,000 people.

What set this Hampton Christmas Parade apart from previous
years was the inclusion of probably the single most important professional sports trophy in history...The Stanley Cup...accompanied by former members of the 2011 NHL Champion Boston Bruins, Terry O'Reilly and Rick Middleton.
Efforts to bring the Stanley Cup to Hampton started long ago through the support of local business and the Hampton Chamber of Commerce, but I would especially like to highlight the efforts of the owners of The 401 Tavern, Desi Lanio and Mark LaRoche, who hosted the final stop of Stanley Cup in Hampton at the 401.
A good time was had by all the patrons with many opportunities to be photographed beside this historical trophy before it was returned to its permanent residence by Hockey Hall of Fame VP, Phil Pritchard.
Our office is located directly across the street from The 401 Tavern, and as usual, we took the opportunity to set up tables on the sidewalk, providing hot coffee and cider, cookies, brownies and other treats for the nearby crowd. Can't wait to see what next years parade will bring!
