Smooth Road Ahead! Aurora completes over $9 million worth of road improvement projects in 2008. More planned for 2009!

Aurora improves roads to tune of $9 million in 2008

The city completed more than $9 million worth of road improvement projects during the 2008 road construction season. Coming in 2009 are plans for additional resurfacing, synchronized traffic signals throughout the city and decorative signals downtown.

The 2008 work was accomplished through three contracts, according to Chris Lirot, road and bridge coordinator for the city. Motor-Fuel Tax funds were used for the repair and resurfacing of arterial and major collector streets. Ward funds were used for resurfacing of residential streets and minor collectors. And Mayor Tom Weisner ordered $3 million in additional resurfacing and repair work after the harsh and snowy winter of 2007-2008.

“We resurfaced every street downtown that was impacted by recent storm sewer separation projects or was in need of repair,” Lirot said.

Major projects that are now in winter shutdown mode include Liberty Street reconstruction from Kautz Road to just west of Asbury Drive. “We’re halfway done, and we’ll start work in the spring and finish next year,” Lirot said.

The reconstruction of Hafenrichter Road from Barrington Drive East to White Thorn Drive is nearing completion. “The curb and gutter and pavement are in,” Lirot said. “We will install the final surface and landscaping in 2009.” The same scenario is in place for Wolf’s Crossing Road from Eola Road to Hoffman Boulevard, Lirot said. Curb and gutter has been installed and the road has been reconstructed. The final surface and landscaping will be done in 2009.

Reconstruction of the Illinois Avenue bridge was completed in July, and a ceremony was held in September to rename the bridge “Veterans Island Memorial Bridge.”

In 2009, crews will begin work on the Wood Street Bridge replacement project on Aurora’s east side, Lirot said. “We are in the process of designing the bridge and getting federal funds for its replacement. Because it crosses both a railroad and a creek, there are several agencies involved in the process.” Illinois highway bridge project funds will pay for 80 percent of the $6 million project.

A traffic signal interconnect project will synchronize signals on a half-dozen arterial streets. “This will affect the whole city,” Schroth said. Eighty percent of the project will be funded with Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds issued by the state.

“Traffic signals downtown will get a facelift,” Lirot said. “They will be more ornamental, with decorative signals, mast arms and poles.”

FREE CFL Light Bulbs to Aurora Residents

I came across this great offer from the City of Aurora I thought I would share!

City offers Free CFL bulbs to residents - source Aurora-il.org

Residents who stop by City Hall at 44 E. Downer Place or the Customer Service Center/Fire Station No. 8 at 3770 McCoy Drive on Aurora’s far east side can pick up free compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) while they last.

Senior citizens (age 65 and older) with proof of age can pick up five bulbs each. All other residents will receive one bulb when they visit. All residents should bring proof of residency to receive a bulb.

The CFLs were made available to Aurora residents through a grant from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. Mayor Tom Weisner sees the bulb giveaway as a way to involve Aurora residents in the city’s Clean City, Green City initiative.

“CFL bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer,” Weisner said. “They also produce about 75 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.”

Makers of the bulbs also say that using CFLs saves $25 or more in electricity costs over each bulb’s lifetime.

Aurora residents may take advantage of many services at City Hall and the Customer Service Center. Among them are:

  • Garbage sticker purchases
  • Recycling container purchases
  • Water bill payments

At the Customer Service Center, qualifying seniors and disabled persons may fill out forms for the RTA’s “Circuit Permit” for free bus and train rides. Voter registration also is available.

At City Hall, residents may purchase prepaid parking cards for the city’s train station lots on Route 59 and Route 25.

Oswego Illinois Real Estate, Home Sales and Market Update, September 2008

What's happening with Home Sales in Oswego Illinois you Ask? Here's the real story. The graph below illustrates where the local home sales are for the month of September, 2008.

So what does this graph actually tell me? This graph is only one of the tools I use to illustrate current transaction activity in our real estate market at any given time. This information, you would agree, is critical to the success of my Sellers. The knowledge we can take from this information is just how many homes are receiving not only offers, but contracts for the month of September 2008 in Oswego Illinois.

So, according to this graph, you will see that 5.3% of the homes listed for sale in Oswego Illinois received agreed contracts to purchase... Roughly 5 out of every 100 homes for sale - whereas nearly 8 out of 100 homes received contracts in September 2006. And from last year, home sales are down .4%!

The second graph located below, illustrates a boiled down 2 year snapshot of the market - from September 2006 to September 2008. So from 2006 to 2008, the percentage of homes Under Contract (UC) is down 35%.

The market is ever changing - and the one thing that never changes is that the market is always on the move. In order to present your home to the market, you need to make sure we're ready to compete. There are numerous ways to make your home stand out from others listed for sale. Knowing how to stand out....that's what I do.

I'm happy to discuss how I position your listing for success. I hope this information was helpful.
