Happy 250th Birthday Millersville

Millersville’s 250 Years of Community Celebration kicked off Saturday night February 26, 2011 with a fashion display, dancing through the decades, and fireworks.

Steven DiGuiseppe and Mary Ann Gerber, co- chairmen of the Millersville 250 committee, met us at the door in period costume.

Several other committee members were also present in period costume.

Clothing most probably worn by earlier citizens of Millersville were on display under the basketball net in Millersville University’s Pucillo Gymnasium.

A slide show of historical photos of Millersville through the past 250 years entertained guests as they mingled.

Presentations and proclamations were presented by county commissioner Craig Lehman, State Senator Lloyd Smucker’s chief of staff Matthew Parido and State Representative Scott Boyd presented a framed map of Millersville from the 1800’s. There were descendants from several founding families present to join in the celebration.

Guests were entertained by professional dancers from Ballroom on the Square who executed a menagerie of dancing from swing to disco followed by the latest moves performed by Millersville University dancers. Guests joined in periodically.

Hors d’oeuvres were served followed by a buffet dinner. And of course The Cake for dessert.

The Cake, decorated by Carlo’s Bakery of Hoboken, NJ (TLC’s The Cake Boss) featured a trolley scene and the Millersville University pond including 2 swans.Mauro Castano was on hand from the bakery to deliver this one and only Millersville 250 Cake!

Gift Baskets filled with goodies from area businesses, a blanket and several books on Millersville topics were given out to 10 lucky guests and I was one of the lucky recipients. The books are We Sing to Thee (a history of Millersville University), 150 Years of MU Faces (1855-2005) and The Centerpiece of the Campus (Biemesderfer Executive Center). I love it and Thank you very much!!!

Our grandson Kyle is showing off the goods.

In case you missed it, there was a fabulous fireworks display to wrap up the evening.

Happy Birthday Millersville!

Whoopie Pie War

When I first heard about the discrepancy between Maine and Pennsylvania over where the first Whoopie Pie originated from, I thought the dis-agreement would be resolved peacefully.
But the disagreemen seems to be turning into a war with an article in The Wall Street Journal, Maine’s intention to declare the Whoopie Pie the State Dessert, and a rally being held in downtown Lancaster, PA today, it doesn’t look like the war will be over anytime soon.

“What the heck is a whoopie pie?” you ask. It is a 2 chocolate cake-like cookies filled with a creamy filling that resembles a mini-burger. Now I have had several whoopie pies in my life including pumpkin flavored cakes and no two whoopie pies are the same. For me, the filling makes the whoopie pie and the best is butter cream filling not the marshmallow whipped filling.

Hey, we have to have our winter entertainment don't we?
