Boulder to Estes Park Bike Ride-Part 2 of 2

Boulder to Estes Park Bike Ride-Part 2 of 2 (Visit Part 1 of 2 for more photos)

On the ride back to Boulder I got caught in a massive thunderstorm, but found shelter in the nick of time. It was nice to just take a nice long break before descending on the 15 mile downhill into Lyons. The ride back along Hwy 36 had a little more traffic than I care for but I made it without any incident.

Overall the ride went really smooth. In fact, it went much better than I had expected. I’ve trained hard over the last month or so and it paid off. Maybe I didn’t set any records, but I proved to myself once again that that with practice, patience and careful planning I can do just about anything I set my mind to.

Boulder to Estes Park Bike Ride-Part 1 (visit Part 2 of 2 for more photos)

ArrivalOn Friday accomplished a solo bicycle ride from Boulder to Estes Park and back. I left at 5:15 am and returned at 5:45 pm. The ride took me up Lee Hill Drive to Left Hand Canyon and then over to Jamestown. I followed Overland Drive above Jamestown across the dirt road to Peak-to-Peak Highway which led me to Hwy. 7. I arrived at the Estes Park visitor center right at noon.

I returned via Hwy. 7 to Lyons and took Hwy 36 back into Boulder. The total distance was 95.8 miles, with total ride time of 8hrs and 14 minutes. I took lots of photos which is partly why it took me so long. A photo break is a break and I needed lots of them. In this post I’ll show some of the highlights of the photos I took on the way up. In another post I’ll show some of the photos I took on the way back.

Colorado Energy Efficiency Finance Summit

GEOI am a member of the Colorado Retrofit Working Group Finance Committee at the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO). Yesterday we held a Finance Summit with the intent of gathering bankers, investors and industry leaders together to discuss the need for financial solutions for the emerging market for Energy Efficient homes and buildings. The summit was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on 15th Street in downtown Denver.

Green HomesGovernor Bill Ritter was the keynote speaker followed by Gil Sperling from the DOE. Other speakers included Stephen Ponce-Pore from the Bank of Colorado—pioneer of the Colorado Energy Star Mortgage—Vasudha Desikan from LiUNA Corporate Affairs, Brettt Johnson from GEO, Ann Livingston—Boulder County Sustainability Coordinator. Other speakers included Adam Stenftenagel of Snugg Home, Elizabeth Million from Bank of America, John Stoval from Ecobroker and John Beldock from AEEREP.

We had 160 pre-registered but actual attendees was about 120. It was a great conference and brought out many of the challenges and opportunities facing those of us in the industry. Financial solutions are key to stimulate market growth for energy efficient homes.

The committee members were honored with a short meeting with Governor Ritter just before the conference started. We had some photos taken which I’ll post within a few days. If you’d like to review some of the slides from the meeting visit the website for the Colorado Energy Efficiency Finance Summit. For additional information about energy efficiency visit the Colorado Governor's Energy Office website.

Going Up!

Tomorrow I’ll do a solo bike ride from Boulder to Estes Park and back. I’ve been training for this for about a month now and I am ready to go. My route will go up Lee Hill Drive to Left Hand Canyon then over to Jamestown. From there I’ll take Overland Drive to Peak-to-Peak Highway. I’ll turn left at Hwy. 7 and follow that to Estes Park. I’ll turn around within an hour and come back Hwy 7 to Lyons and then take Hwy 36 back to Boulder.

I estimate the total distance at about 95 miles and the peak elevation around 10,000 feet. This will be the first long distance ride for me in the Rocky Mountains and I am really looking forward to it. I’m not trying to set any records, just finish the ride on two wheels. I’ll post some photographs of the ride within a couple of days.

The photo below shows my bicycle, which I’ve had for nearly 30 years. I have logged thousands of miles on that bike—it has served me well. It’s an old racing frame that I modified for long distance.

Flowers in the Early Morning

Flowers in the Early Morning

I set off on an early morning bike ride this morning. I was late leaving at around 5:45 am but managed to finish one of my stronger rides.

As I headed up Lee Hill Drive out of Boulder toward Jamestown, I stopped to photograph some flowers. It was cloudy so it was still quite dark. The flash came on and gave me a few good shots of the flowers. I didn’t notice the bugs on the yellow flowers until I looked at the pictures.
