Happy New Year To All!

As we all are pondering ways to revitalize our careers while we hang our clean new calendars and change out our tattered 2008 planners, I have one simple suggestion that we all might just "resolve" to use....

It goes back to First Grade Grammar (aaahhh, remember Miss Smith with the long brown hair pulled back in barrettes?) While we all mastered contractions with ease, I notice that most of us don't realize that there still is a time when we do NOT use "IT'S".... stated "IT apostrophe S".

As an anal English Major (and only WE know how anal WE can be), I am just one of a very small group who would actually pick up on this but when I do pick up on it....I think I would feel better scraping my finger nails down a chalkboard!

But don't despair, because I have a simple trick for you so you never make the mistake again. And I'm going to be checking so listen up.....

The word "it's" is a contraction for "it + is" right? So, if I say "Oh, it's a beautiful day!" I am really saying "It is a beautiful day!" Easy enough!

But if I am saying "The cow bumped it's head on the railing", am I saying "The cow bumped it is head on the railing?" Nope!

So next time you stumble upon the word, just ask yourself, "Did the cow bump ITS head on the railing or did the cow bump IT IS head on the railing?

Take a second to think about it and it will come naturally with time!

I have hundreds of simple tips like this that will make you all GCP's (Grammatically Correct Posters). I have only just begun so please check in from time to time!!!! Also feel free to post your stumbling blocks here and we will work through them together...and have some fun while we are at it!
