A Little Red Schoolhouse And The Three "R's"

RED This one room red schoolhouse was in use until 1939.

RESPECTED The fact that it survived postwar expansion in the Springfield area is a story unto itself. It is only a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the Fairfax County Parkway in the middle of one of the most densely populated areas of Northern Virginia

RESTORED It was purchased in 1950 by the Upper Pohick Community League. Its' members restored it to its' original condition, continue to maintain it and use it for their meetings. It is not open to the public.

The encased flag above hangs in the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle VA.

This is the flag that was used by Joe Rosenthal in the famous photo that eventually became the inspiration for the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

The smaller flag used for the original photo taken about 20 minutes earlier by a USMC photographer is also displayed with the one above on a rotating basis.

There were 25,851 Marine and Navy casualties during the 36 day campaign - 6,825 of whom were killed.

Brentsville Courthouse - Part Of The Prince William County Fabric Since 1822

Prince William County Flag

In 1820 it only took 50 acres to establish Brentsville and make it the county seat of Prince William County. As residents moved farther west to work new farmland the existing county seat at Dumfries was too far east to serve them easily. Brentsville was a logical choice since it was centrally located along the major east/west road that went as far as the Shenandoah Valley. When the county seat moved to Manassas in 1893 Brentsville was able to maintain its' 19th century rural trappings.

In 18th and early 19th century rural Virginia the courthouse was the dominant power in county government. Today, the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre covers 28 acres along Bristow Road and includes five buildings and numerous archaeological sites. A visit to the beautifully maintained site will provide both an educational and relaxing way to spend a day learning about the early history of Prince William County.
