And You Think People Are Unpredictable

We live in Lake Ridge, Woodbridge VA, a 4,400 acre heavily treed subdivision.  The common area of 1,200 acres is densely treed as well.  Additionally, Lake Ridge adjoins the Occoquan Reservoir with its' thousands of acres of woodland. The picture below, taken from our deck, gives you some indication as to how many trees there are on or very close to the Lake Ridge homesites.

Lake Ridge, Woodbridge VA trees

It would seem there are enough trees within miles of my deck for a squirrel to find normal "squirrel nest building sites". You can imagine my surprise when I took the cover off our barbecue and found a squirrel's nest in the LP bottle area.

Either her parent's dropped the ball or she didn't read the "Official Squirrel Handbook". In either case, the nest is only about two weeks old and too new to have baby squirrels - research indicated squirrel breeding season is over until Spring.

That will give her ample time to build a new nest - nest removal is now on my husband's "Honey Do List". We would not remove it if she was pregnant.

JUST AS THERE ARE MANY SQUIRREL HOME SITES THERE ARE ALSO MANY FOR HUMANS

COMMUTING

  • Express bus service to the Pentagon and Washington, DC is available within Lake Ridge and at the entrance to Lake Ridge in the VDOT Commuter Lot
  • Carpools usually meet at the VDOT Commuter Lot at the entrance to Lake Ridge - see Omnimatch for more specific details
  • Slugging (some erroneously call it hitching a ride which it is) is a result of the need to use HOV lanes on the I-95 as much as possible. Commuters form a line at a designated Slug Line Stop in Lake Ridge - the VDOT Commuter at the Lake Ridge entrance. For example, a driver will pull up headed for the Pentagon, but needs one more passenger to qualify for HOV-3. The first person in line going to the Pentagon will join the others in the car and away they go. It's free commuting for the slugger and gives the driver availability to HOV lanes on I-95 - win win!!
  • Train The Virginia Railway Express Woodbridge Station with rail service to Springfield, Crystal City and Union Station in Washington, DC is approximately a 20 minute drive from Lake Ridge in the morning rush hour. At Springfield you can switch to Metrorail that gives you access to the entire National Capital Area subway system.

Does This Crowd Look Like It Could Win A War?

The title above was a comment made by a gentleman who was part of a group of men and women enjoying a light breakfast together and assembling for the Veteran's Day Parade in Manassas VA.

American Legion Post 10 of Manassas conceived, planned and managed the Inaugural Veteran's Day Parade in Manassas, VA.  The parade had 91 Grand Marshals.  Why 91?  It was decided that the parade would honor as many Prince William County World War II veterans as possible and 91 was the number who responded  to the call.

My husband and business partner, Arthur, was one of the 91 since he is a WWII veteran, having served in the South Pacific and China as a US Marine.

As you can see they were aboard a huge flatbed trailer decorated and equipped as a float, leading the parade through Old Town Manassas.  I can attest to the fact they received enthusiastic applause and comments as they rode along.  They stopped across from the reviewing stand as the hour long parade passed in review.

Vets honoring the flag

Although Arthur is many years my senior he is both physically and mentally alert, but more importantly, like most other men and women on that float he

  • Shouted "Thank you for your service" or "God Bless You" and similar phrases to any active duty military personnel standing along the parade route
  • Paid honor to the American flag with a salute (appropriate for veterans) or hand over their heart each time it passed them

We honor all veterans on this day, but it is easy to understand why the name "Greatest Generation" has been reserved for this unique group. Frankly, they might just be able to fool you and win another war.  At the very least I know they would be more than ready to give it a try if it was necessary.

"We can't all be heroes. Someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by." - Will Rogers

The good people of Manassas played their part enthusiastically as the WWII vets passed by.
