Have You Ever Walked a Labyrinth?

If you've walked through a labyrinth laid out on the floor or ground in a church, public park, hospital, school, retreat center or even progressive businesses, you've joined millions of people who've discovered this wonderful tool for personal, psychological and spiritual transformation.

Labyrinths date back at least 3500, and it is only since the early 1990‘s that they have undergone a dramatic revival into non-religious settings springing up all over the world in diverse places such as Central Park in New York City, Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and the Riverfront Walkway in Naperville, Illinois to name a few. They are made out of all kinds of materials - snow, sand, chalk, fragrant flowers, woodchips, tiles, stones, some are mowed into fields, some are planted from seeds, some are painted on canvas.

Labyrinth

The picture I of took of this Labyrinth is located in Pflugerville, Texas along an area of the Pflugerville hiking trails next to First Presbyterian Church at Pecan Street. It is made from stone blocks in gravel meandering around four trees.

What is a Labyrinth and Why Do People Walk It? A labyrinth is not a maze, but rather a walking meditation devise with a single path leading to and from the center. The general idea is to quiet your mind, and use the walking inwards toward the middle to think about releasing and letting go of things that are in the way of your health, progress, success, etc. Then when you reach the center, you meditate and pray and stay as long as you want, absorbing energy and gathering strength and peace. Then you take the same path out, becoming empowered to make changes. You start to have a sense of growth as you come to a labyrinth with different issues, different things you walk in and out with, over time. More and more people are walking labyrinths today in search of inner peace and healing.

Here's an interesting website on The Labyrinth.
