"# 2...and that ain't bad"

The movie, Picture Perfect, is a light romantic comedy that features Jennifer Aniston as an advertising executive. She creates a marketing campaign for "Gulden's Mustard". In the film the Gulden's tagline becomes "#2 and that ain't bad". The campaign features famous people who have come in second. One of these people was Cindy Crawford who according to the movie came in second in her class at STANFORD! Therefore she was considered to be "#2 and that ain't bad" especially since she is still one of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Today's mindset for so many people is that #2 is just the first loser. That the only winners in the world are the one's that come in first place. Many give little if any credit for participation or beating out the rest of the competition. In most cases we can never recall who came in 2nd place in any major sporting event or who the Oscar nominees were. We remember the WINNER!

The same is true in any real estate market. If you were to ask the general public who the #1 agent for residential sales in your area is they would probably get that correct. In 2008 the number 1 Realtor in the Lexington/Henderson County Tennessee market is Linda Lipscomb, who is my broker and mentor. But out of the remaining 30 or so agents in Lexington who is number 2. If asked I think that most people would respond with the name of one of our communities long time brokers or agents that have graced the pages of our local newspaper for decades. BUT they'd be wrong.

Number 2 in our neck of the wood's is quite a surprise even to me. For an agent being in the business for less than 3 years to be in second place in a challenging year like 2008 is a shock!

So in a world that readily dismisses the second place finish, I am PROUD to say that for 2008 I was #2 and that ain't bad"!!

LEADERSHIP HENDERSON COUNTY CLASS 2009

Earlier today I spoke with the Henderson County Chamber Director and found out that I have been selected as a member of the 2009 Leadership Henderson County Class.

This is a great program that is put together annually as a personal development program to create a diverse group of informed, committed and qualified individuals who will provide a leadership source for Henderson County organizations, both public and private. The program encourages, identifies, and develops community leaders.

Leadership Henderson County was started during 1996 as a part of the Governor's Three Star Community Award Initiative. Today, this has proven to be one of the best programs ever implemented by the Chamber of Commerce. The participation from the community has been overwhelming. The classes have made very effective changes in the future of our county.

The class meets in ten sessions during the year to provide these individuals with a better understanding of major concerns and opportunities facing Henderson County. Some of the topics that may be covered this year included teamwork, medical, economic development, tourism, public safety, government, education.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to be a part the 2009 Leadership Henderson County (TN) class and to share with all you 'Rainers' how I progress!

KISS off New Year's Resolutions!

Ringing in a New Year can be so exciting. A 'clean slate', a 'fresh start', a 'new beginning' are all phrases associated with the start of another year. For many of us it is also a time of reflection and resolutions. We will sit down with pen in hand and make a list of resolutions...the things we want to accomplish in the new year. Some lists are long, others short but the long and short of it is that most are forgotten as we get back into our regular schedules and routines.

So just how can we make a resolution and keep it....KISS off Resolutions....Keep It Simple Silly!

Ask these questions as you embrace these changes in your life....

WHAT? What do you REALLY want to change or accomplish in the new year? Let's say you want to lose 20 pounds, great! Weight loss is a very common resolution and will be on many of those New Year's Resolution lists but why is it that so few of us actually lose those pounds? Mostly because we don't address the other questions.

WHY? Why do you want to lose 20 pounds? What is your motivation for change? Want to look better in your clothes, want to be healthier and more fit, or do you have a special occasion coming up? Attach your motivating factor to your resolution list. "I want to lose 20 pounds because....."

WHEN? When you leave your resolutions open ended you set yourself up for procrastination and most probably failure. SO set a particular date or event to accomplish your goal. "I want to lose 20 pounds by my birthday because ...."

HOW? FINALLY but most importantly write down how you plan to reach your resolution. How are you going to lose your 20 pounds? Will you join the gym and begin an exercise program or begin some sort of dieting program? How are you going to get where you plan to be? You have to formulate some sort of written plan or you will just flounder around and fail to even get started on the road to resolution.

By KISSing off our resolutions by keeping them realistic and simplistic we give them a fighting chance of actually surviving until February.

Best of Luck and a Wonderful 2009 to you all!
