Hickory's Yard Waste Facility will add extra sale days beginning Thursday, February 19, 2009.

The facility used to only be open on Fridays. Starting Thursday February 19, 2009 it will be open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8am - 1pm. It is located off Cloninger Mill Road which is off Route 127 at the Hess gas station just before bridge into Alexander County. The reason for the increased hours is due to the large amount of mulch and large customer demand for the mulch.  

The material used for the mulch and compost comes from what city crews pick up during the year including tree branches, Christmas trees and leaves.  Single ground mulch is $5 per scoop (pickup load), a limited amount of double ground mulch is available for $15 per scoop (pickup load) and the city's leaf compost is $10 per scoop (pickup load).

POLAR PLUNGE IN LAKE HICKORY

WHERE: Whittenburg Wildlife Access at Lake Hickory

WHY: Raise money for Special Olympics in North Carolina

FACTS:

• It's a family event and crowds show up every year to watch people leap from the dock into the icy water in costume.

• The only clothing items prohibited are wetsuits and dry suits and every plunger is required to wear shoes.

• Plungers will be able to towel off and change into dry clothes in a heated trailer after they take the leap and that might be the right time to change into the commemorative long-sleeve T-shirt every participant will earn.

• To join in, each participant must make a minimum donation of $50 to the Special Olympics. Donations can come from friends and family members who sponsor the participant's plunge and many jumpers go well beyond the $50 minimum donation.

• The event raised about $7,500 last year.
