Local Restaurants Join in for Concerts on the Common 2009
Weather permitting, the Thursday evening Concerts on the Common series in Sturbridge picks up this Thursday, July 2. And this year, concert attendees will see a little something extra: Several of the area's local restaurants have teamed up to offer picnic fare on the Common. You may see offerings from B.T.'s Smokehouse, Sturbridge Coffee House, and Rovezzi's. So, if you don't have time to pack a picnic, no problem. You can purchase your dinner at the Concert.
All concerts begin at 6:30 pm. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket - something comfortable. If the weather calls for rain, an alternate location will be announced.

For those of you looking for children's clothing, I encourage you to stop by the Children's Crossing store in Sturbridge, MA.
Children's Crossing is a used clothing store. The concept is simple. If you have gently used, high quality children's clothing that you wish to sell, make an appointment to bring your goods to the store. The owners will review your items and make you an offer on the pieces they want to purchase for their inventory. You may take that amount as cash or as store credit.
On the shopping end, Children's Crossing offers clothing from newborn up to kids size 12. Today, they had a 10% off sale, and I found four pairs of pants for my 11-year-old for $18 and change. One item was a brand-new pair of Land's End jeans. A steal!
The store also buys and sells children's accessories and gear, games, and shoes. They just opened a used women's department, which includes maternity pieces.
In speaking with Katie, one of the owners, she mentioned that the store particularly needs clothes for boys ages 8 and up. Pants tend to fly out of the store on a regular basis, and as parents of boys in this age group know, it is a challenge to keep the knees of these kids' pants intact.
Children's Crossing is open from 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday, and 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. The store is located at 479 Main Street in Sturbridge, which is Route 20, next to Sturbridge Coffee.
Here's an idea: Stop in at Sturbridge Coffee for its Friday morning children's music hour at 10 AM, then wander over to Children's Crossing for some summer clothes for your kids. Let me know what deals you find!

Free Ice Cream!
My son came home from school today asking that we go to Friendly's on Saturday. From noon to 5 PM, the well-known ice cream store is holding its annual Free Ice Cream Day, and the Friendly's in Sturbridge is indeed participating. Friendly's is offering a free single scoop of ice cream in a cone or dish. Perfect for an after-baseball or softball treat.
We've never attended this event, so I can not offer any tips on the best times to go, but the weather report looks perfect for an afternoon ice cream break. Check the Friendly's web site to make sure your local Friendly's is offering this special to your community.

If you are in town this weekend and looking for something to do, here are some ideas for fun in beautiful Sturbridge, Massachusetts:
Friday, May 22
1. The most exciting event tonight is the boxing show put on by the Massachusetts State Police. Boxers from Massachusetts, New York, Denver, and even the UK will be coming to town to compete. The event will be held at the Sturbridge Host Hotel, starting at 7 PM.
2. Waterfront dining. This will be the perfect night to enjoy dinner and drinks at the outside bar on Cedar Lake at the Oxhead Tavern, Main Street/Route 20, next to the Sturbridge Host Hotel.
3. Happy hour on the deck. Don't miss happy hour on Admiral T.J. O'Brien's deck. Stay for a fish fry, too.
Saturday, Sunday, and Monday - May 23, 24 and 25
1. Wool Days at Old Sturbridge Village (OSV). Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally the time of year that the sheep at OSV get sheared. The interpreters at the Village will explain the entire wool textile process, from shearing to weaving.
Other weekend activities at OSV include stagecoach rides, boat rides, musket firing, 19th Century dance, and many hands-on exhibits. OSV will also officially be opening its newest permanent exhibit, Farm, Families and Change: New England Farming and Rural Life. Visit for a day or two to get your fix of life in the 1830's.
2. Kickoff of "Cover the Bases" Contest. Four family favorites are participating in this contest, which runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Visit Old Sturbridge Village, the Worcester Tornadoes, the Higgins Armory Museum, and the EcoTarium. Get your game card stamped at each venue, and submit it to win one of any number of prizes.
Monday, May 25
1. Memorial Day Parade, starting at 9:25 AM, at the corner of Routes 20 and 148. See Parade Schedule.
2. Continued activities at Old Sturbridge Village.
3. Boating. The weather forecast looks great for boaters and fishermen. Put in at any of the numerous lakes and ponds and enjoy a peaceful day.
