Katie Evans

GO PIRATES! ARRRRRRRGGGG!

The season's first Freeboot Friday is on for today despite soggy conditions caused by a coastal storm.

In its eighth year, the series of outdoor socials runs from 5-8 p.m., with live music, food, drinks and children's activities.

The first event was canceled on Sept. 5 due to Tropical Storm Hanna. Two other Freeboots are on the books for Oct. 17 and Nov.7.

Previous Freeboots were held at the corner of Fifth and Evans streets, but due to construction today's event will take place in the Moseley Lot at the corner of Fourth and Cotanche streets.

The October and November events will move back to the original location. Tonight's music will feature the bands Old Man Whickutt and Clumsy Lovers.

Old Man Whickutt is made up of Marcus Hall (guitar, banjo, gong, vocals) and Rob Hall (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, gong, vocals).

Clumsy Lovers is the happy-go-lucky Vancouver, British Columbia, quintet made up of banjo, bass guitar, fiddle, harmonica, guitar, percussion and vocals. The group plays music that walks the tightrope between tradition-minded roots music and modern pop. Freeboots are an official launch for a weekend of meeting and greeting, tailgating and football frenzy. ECU hits the gridiron in a non-conference matchup against Houston at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium.

In case of inclement weather, Freeboots will now have an indoor location at Ham's Restaurant and Brewhouse, 701 Evans St.

FHA Responds To Buy & Bail Transactions

This update from Mortgagee Letter 2008-25 establishes guidelines for situations where people buy one home with the intention of defaulting on their current residence, which is known as "buy & bail." Here are the 7 things you need to know about these changes:

1. This is a temporary change, and effective as of September 19th, 2008.

2. The borrower must be relocating to a new job location.

3. The new home must be outside reasonable commuting distance from the current residence (UW's discretion).

4. The borrower must have a fully executed lease with at least a 1-year term from the closing date of their new mortgage.

5. The borrower must document receipt of the security deposit and/or first month's rent

6. Current residence must have an LTV of 75% or less.

7. The value of current residence can be proved with the following:

Greenville's Gas Supply is Still Low

09-18-08
Katie Evans

Gasoline supplies remain low for many local retailers.

Sheetz on 10th Street was still out of fuel Wednesday afternoon. Three local Kangaroo stations were left with only premium grade fuel. Pirate's Choice Exxon, at the corner of Greenville Boulevard and Evans Street, and the 10th Street BP had the opposite problem - only regular fuel was available.

Many local vendors are selling gas at $3.89, including most Greenville BPs, Shell stations and the U.S. 264 Wilco-Hess. The

Wilco-Hess on Memorial Drive and Evans Street's Duck Thru were selling gas at $3.88, and the BP at the intersection of 14th Street and Greenville Boulevard had regular unleaded for $3.85 at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Prices jumped to $3.99 and above for regular grade gasoline over the weekend around Pitt County, as lines formed at the pumps Friday and snaked around convenience stores.

But those woes were not to be compared to problems in the western part of North Carolina, where state Attorney General Roy Cooper has launched a price gauging investigation with subpoenas.

No such action had occurred by Wednesday in Pitt County, but the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division had heard from more than 3,700 consumers statewide who claim they were charged as much as $5.99 per gallon for gasoline during the weekend.

The state's gouging law went into effect Friday when Governor Mike Easley declared a state of "abnormal market disruption."

"As a result of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, oil refineries in Texas and Louisiana have temporarily interrupted some gasoline supplies to the pipelines that serve North Carolina," Easley said in a news release. "Therefore, there may be temporary limitations on our gas supply. However, wholesale gas prices are up less than 20 cents a gallon over the last few days. Therefore, consumers should not see prices rise substantially more than this rise in the wholesale price."

The subpoenas require vendors to produce documentation of the cost of each grade of motor fuel delivered to the location, the price they charged customers and the volume of fuel sold between July 1 to the present. They are also asked for any "other price and cost information" that affected their pricing.

Department of Justice spokeswoman Noelle Talley said more subpoenas are expected in the coming days.

N.C. Rep. Edith Warren said she's spoken to several Farmville vendors to inform them about the gouging law and discourage them from taking advantage of customers.

"I just care about our citizens being treated fairly," she said. "And I want people to be aware they can contact the attorney general's office if they have a concern."
