Hickory, NC and the surrounding communities has been known for years as one of the best places to retire in the Southeast! Katie and I, as your Realtors , will help you choose the best possible location to retire . This is why we have created an online resource center for retired individuals to learn more about the Hickory, NC area and the surrounding communities ! Choosing where to retire is an important "life decision." The right retirement destination can lead to years of contentment; the wrong choice can cause you to miss out on pursuing your passion, or it could be costly. We have developed some outstanding retirement planning resources to help you focus on your retirement lifestyle choices, plan and conduct your search for a retirement destination , and make the right decision. The right retirement destination can lead to years of contentment; the wrong choice can cause you to miss out on pursuing your passions as you are burdened with additional expenses. Several factors to mull over when choosing your retirement destination include a city's economic and political stability, cultural issues, and whether or not the country offers particular retirement benefit programs. Finding the right place to settle not only involves researching the financial issues of retirement but also the quality-of-life issues most important to you. Another thing to think about is distance from loved ones. If spending time with your grandchildren during retirement is important to you then moving half way around the world is most likely not your best option. Talk to your family and find out how they feel about your choices and how it is going to affect your relationships with them. Ideally, vacation for at least a week during different seasons anywhere you're considering retiring. Check out recreation, senior services , entertainment , healthcare and possible social connections in person. You can't always believe what you read or are told. Then, if it is a possibility, rent or lease a place before making a purchase. Most importantly, think about what you want out of your retirement and if these destinations are going to be able to offer what you need. Choosing a retirement destination is all about choosing the best place for you. These are factors that everyone should take into consideration, but in the end it is about the kind of life style you are looking for and where to go to get it.

| Hickory, NC began as a small piedmont city whose growth and development moved it from a late nineteenth-century trading center on the Western North Carolina Railroad to a thriving twentieth-century manufacturing center for furniture, hosiery, and textiles. The history and development of Hickory has been divided into five stages of growth. The earliest phase began at the end of the eighteenth century and ended with the outbreak of the Civil War (1769-1860). The second phase began when the Civil War ended, as the city's population and economy expanded as well as increased development in cultural and educational facilities (1861-1900). This second phase lasted until around 1901, when the establishment of the first large-scale furniture plant made permanent changes in the manufacturing business. From 1901 until the onset of World War I in 1917, many furniture factories as well as hosiery and textile mills were built in the city's realm resulting in a rise in population, service industries, and building activity. During World War I, construction in the city declined only to be followed by a large increase in population and housing needs, growth of businesses and manufacturing companies, and the extension of public services rendered by local government (1918-1940). Growth since 1940- After World War II Hickory continued growing and by 1961 the city boasted forty-six furniture plants, eight-nine hosiery mills, twenty-seven other manufactories, and a population of 37,000 people. A vast urban renewal project as well as continual redevelopment also accompanied this period of growth. Much of the historic fabric of Hickory's downtown was removed or drastically altered in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving gaping holes in the urban landscape. Yet, this period also saw the emergence of historic preservation efforts in Hickory , a trend that has grown in scope by instilling pride in the city's past by encouraging the appreciation, preservation, and continued use of Hickory's historic resources. Currently, the City of Hickory has been awarded a grant to conduct a survey of the city's historic resources. The grant will allow the Historic Preservation Commission to hire a certified historic resource professional to identify historic structures along the boundaries of established historic districts. The survey will be used to consider future expansion of Hickory's historic districts. The last survey, conducted in 1979, indicated that there were 168 historical sites within Hickory's city limits. Since this survey was completed, it has been estimated that about 32 of these structures have been demolished. Hopefully, the survey will help the Commission develop a long range historic preservation plan for the City of Hickory , it will also serve as a catalyst for other projects designed to promote, educate, and preserve Hickory's historic treasures. | The "Breathtaking" Views of Lake HickoryLake Hickory is a fully recreational lake for countless activities including jet skiing, wakeboarding, canoeing, and even swimming! The Lake Hickory area was voted by Reader's Digest as One of the Top 10 Places in America to Raise a Family ! Lake Hickory has over 100 miles of shoreline, totaling over 4200 acres of surface area. Lake Hickory offers 16 public boat launches and six marinas. Lake Hickory is a full recreational lake, allowing jet skis, water skiing, swimming, tubing, boat docks, fishing, and other water activities. The attractive shoreline of Lake Hickory is one of its greatest assets. Duke Power, the owner of the lake, has kept over 20 miles of shoreline for natural areas. The rest of the shoreline displays custom built homes, ranging in size from 2,000 to 7,000+ square feet, with beautiful docks, many with second level viewing decks. With boating traffic rated as low to moderate, you can see why so many people describe the natural beauty of Lake Hickory as "breathtaking." And when you see it, you will feel the same!
