New All Day Pond Class in Grass Valley - June 5, 2010

Hi Everyone,

Paul Weir and I am putting on a new all day pond class next month here in Nevada County.

June 5, 2010

It will be held onsite at a local teaching ranch in Grass Valley, CA

  • Have you always wanted a pond, but don't know where to begin?
  • Are you struggling to evict scum from your pond?
  • Weeds and algae getting the best of you?
  • Have your fish been failing to thrive?
  • Planning to build a small pond (1/4 to 20 acres in size) on your property?
  • Need to know how to bring your pond back into balance?
  • Want to know how to save loads money and time by doing things correctly the 1st time?

If you said yes to any of the above, than this class will help you for sure!

We will be discussing . . .

  • Individual and /or multipurpose ponds; i.e., fishing, irrigation, swimming, and use as fire protection.
  • Physical characteristics of a good pond, depth, islands, aeration and proper side slopes
  • We will discuss how to test for a leak and how to seal a leaky pond
  • Learn all about pond ecosystems
  • How to get started with your pond construction and how to best manage your pond too.
  • . . . and answering all of your specific pond questions too.

Please bring a lunch, a lawn chair, sunscreen or a jacket (depending on the weather), walking shoes and note pad.

This is an all day class 9am - 3pm: $45 per person with a spouse free

2010 NID Irrigation Class - May 1st and 8th

Hello Friends,

Green Acres 101 and the great folks at NID have just locked in the dates for the 2010 NID (Nevada Irrigation District) Irrigation Classes.

THE CLASS IS TOTALLY FREE! (NID is paying the tuition) and is open to the 1st 30 people who sign up on each day. If the day you select is full, please ask to be put on the waiting list and additional days will be added soon thereafter

We will be covering all aspects of NID irrigation as it pertains to rural land owners in Nevada and Placer Counties.

Some of the many items we will be covering include:

• How much water do I need for irrigated pastures, orchards, and vineyards?

• What is a Miner’s Inch? Why is it important? If 1 inch is good, is 2 inches better?

• How many acres of pasture, orchard, and vineyard will a Miner’s Inch irrigate?

• What are the best grasses for my irrigated and non-irrigated pastures?

• How do I evaluate my own irrigation system for uniformity and application rates?

• When should I irrigate and how much?

• Are there tools for measuring soil moisture levels?

• Does a pond or holding tank make sense in an irrigation design?

• Why does water pressure matter so much?

This special pond workshop is sponsored by the Sloughhouse Resource Conservation District and the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts with funding from a California Department of Conservation Watershed Coordinator Grant

It will be held onsite at a local teaching ranch in Herald, CA (Sloughouse Area of Sacramento County).

  • Have you always wanted a pond, but don't know where to begin?
  • Are you struggling to evict scum from your pond?
  • Weeds and algae getting the best of you?
  • Have your fish been failing to thrive?
  • Planning to build a small pond (1/4 to 20 acres in size) on your property?
  • Need to know how to bring your pond back into balance?
  • Is you pond failing to hold water (leaking)?
  • Want to know how to save loads money and time by doing things correctly the 1st time?

If you said yes to any of the above, than this class will help you for sure!
