How backward we are: A trashy morning in Columbus, Ohio

It’s August 28th.
It’s Thursday morning.
The time is 6:00am.
I wake up.
“It’s trash day,” I thought to myself. What a wonderful way to think of the day, huh?

The time is now 6:25am.
I take the trash container to the curb.
I have an unpleasant experience with one piece of my trash.
My desire to shower increases tremendously.
I go inside to follow that desire.

I’m inside.
I hear a large yellow familiar roar down the street.
The roar itself is not large and yellow. The collection truck is.
Looking through the curtain, something catches my eye.
I see bright red and white alien spaceship-like lights.

I open the curtain to look outside.
The truck is going backward.
Backward is not traditional.
“That’s interesting,” I thought.
In only a moment, I learned why.

As the truck was passing my neighbor’s house across the street, he saw my neighbor bringing out his trash container. These are large 90-gallon wheeled containers, so it’s not a quick task. The driver backed up the truck, at least 25 feet, to collect the trash. Now that’s service!

Do you agree that in current times, most services … no matter the industry … would have “kept driving?” My neighbor would’ve watched the truck drive off into the sunrise. Being surprised the driver backed up to collect the trash is actually unfortunate. We all should be shocked by poor service instead of excellent service. How backward we are.

I for sure don’t give the trash industry enough credit. I love that one can find the most unpleasant moment and the greatest moment with trash. I plan to send a compliment to the department.

If you see something surprisingly excellent, make sure to do the same … no matter the industry.

The 2008 Ohio State Fair took place July 30th – August 10th. The Columbus Dispatch reported the attendance this year at nearly 810,000. I was one of them!

It was my first trip to the fair. I’ve lived in Columbus for a few years now, so call me a late bloomer. I would’ve shown more food, but it was devoured before I took any pictures or video. Priorities you know!

I’ll certainly make it an annual trip. You can’t miss it. I’m glad I didn’t. It’s large enough to visit a couple of times and still not see everything. Plan now to visit at least once in 2009!

The small 'no box' store

The small no box store.

When’s the last time your visit to a big box store was a good time? I’m not saying don’t visit the big box stores, but it’s a chore instead of an experience.

Did you ever wonder why you always spend more there than you want? They’re setup to help you spend more every time. These are big corporations with big dollars. They understand your shopping patterns better than you do.

Then there’s the small ‘no box’ store. What’s that you say?

It’s a place where you see neighbors in a leisurely light. The experience is calmer. The air is fresher and so is the food. The ingredients are real, not artificial. You actually know where the food comes from and it’s basically your back yard … in a metro area kinda way. What are we talking about? Farmers’ markets.

Farmers’ markets may be small at times, but you gotta start somewhere. They may take time to get used to. Take the time to stroll the first time. Make sure you visit a second and third time. You’ll start to understand the experience of shopping instead of the chore of shopping.

Columbus Square Farmers MarketIf you see something that you typically buy from the big box, try spending that little extra and purchase it from the farmers’ market. Celebrate that it’s not a tax. It’s a voluntary investment into your local economy. The more we put in the pot, the bigger it gets. Every little bit helps improve our nation. That goes for any local business, but farmers’ markets are the core, the foundation of life … it’s food and good food.

Help our area grow stronger by visiting local farmers’ markets. These jobs stay here in the USA and help improve our local economy. Best of all, you get the freshest and tastiest ‘straight from the earth’ food you’ll ever find.
