Is this a sign of trouble with our Saguaros in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, AZ

Today I was hiking with some friends in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, AZ. I noticed that alot of the saguaros were bending at the top. I am curious to find out of this due to our drought or to another problem.

Banana TreeYes, I am preparing to harvest my one bunch of bananas here in Tucson, AZ. I was so excited last spring when my husband called me outside to see bananas growing in our tree.

We moved into our new home in La Paloma Estates about two and a half years ago. My husband is a custom homebuilder and we move every two years or so.

Last spring when I saw bananas growing in our tropical garden area, I could not help but send pictures, from my cellular phone, to all our children and friends.

Now comes harvesting time. My research has concluded that it generally takes 3 to 6 months to mature. Hello...that's a long time variance. I want to harvest my bananas at the correct time to enjoy the fruit of our efforts, so to speak. I've been reading up on harvesting. The long flower bracket will get brittle and break off easily when the bananas are ready. We tested the bracket last week and it still seemed too flexible, so we decided to give it another week. The fruit is round and plump, a good sign for mature fruit, and the flower looks like it has almost finished blooming.

When we do decide to harvest the bananas, we will have to cut down the entire tree. The banana tree when maturing develops a daughter shoot or shoots which will become the main tree after harvesting. (Our banana tree has two daughter shoots one almost as big as the main tree.)

My research indicates that when we cut the bunch of bananas off the tree we need to put them in a plastic bag with another fruit that is ripening. The article suggests that we use more bananas or an apple. Then we place the bananas in the dark, a closet or cabinet at room temperature, to start the process for 24 to 48 hours. This will allow ethylene gas to be emitted. After the 24-48 hour period we can put them out on the counter to mature the rest of the way.

We are looking forward to tasting our bananas. I will let you know how the process works.
