We had quite a snow storm the other day, it looked like a winter wonderland up on Mauna Kea. Driving around Kona, I counted 4 different snowmen - NO - it didn't snow all the way down to Kona, but everybody loads up the trucks with snow, and then we head to the beach and build snow men. Obviously kona is at Sea level, but Mauna Kea goes up to the 13,795 foot level - lots of snow up there! A lot of people dont realize how BIG - the big island is - you can take all the other islands, combine them together, then double them in size, lay them out over the big island, and you still have room to spare! Hawaii Island contains perhaps the world's greatest concentration of climate types in its 4038 square miles. From dry, coastal, desert strand to some of the wettest spots on earth, to hot humid tropical lushness to stark, barren, snow-capped mountains, our big island offers an astonishing array of climates. You have probably heard a similar oft-quoted line, "Hawaii has 11 of the world's 13 climate zones." How many world climate zones are there, and which ones does Hawaii have?
Read below - more information according to Hawaii Forest and Trail

Hawaii has the two tallest mountains on earth. When measured from their base off the ocean floor, both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa rise over 31,000 feet high. The summits have a Polar Tundra climate. Here soil is permanently frozen. It is cold up there and the area receives an average of 15 inches or less of rain annually. Directly below the summit Polar Tundra zone are narrow bands of a Temperate climate called the Summer-Dry Cool zone. This zone covers the upper montane and sub-alpine areas circling around the peaks down to about 8500' elevation. The upper summit area of Hualalai is also in this zone. Warmer than the Polar yet still cool enough to leave frost on the ground at times, this zone gets around 15 to 20 inches of rain a year. Still dropping down in elevation, we pick up another Temperate zone, the Summer Dry-Warm climate. This zone dominates the volcanic saddles between Kohala and Mauna Kea, or the Waimea Plains, and the Pohakuloa saddle area between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. As its name implies it is characterized by summer dryness and though warmer than the cool zone it has about the same annual precipitation. The next climate down makes up the largest climate zone on the island-the Continuously Wet Warm Temperate climate. It stretches from the mid-elevations of windward Kohala, along the Hamakua, Hilo, and Puna rainforests, wrapping around the island through Kau, and North and South Kona . In these mauka lands some of the largest remnants of native Hawaiian rainforest still exists between 2500 to 6500 feet elevation. The rainfall in this zone varies between 60 to 150 inches a year. Much of the precipitation falls as fog-drip creating a cloud-mist type rainforest.
Below this Temperate zone lies the Wet Tropical climate. Along the entire windward coast from sea level up to 2000 to 3000 feet in elevation lies the Continuously Wet sub-zone. Here temperatures stay warm to hot and rainfall exceeds 300 inches a year in some areas. This is the climate where the majority of the island's residents live. The south and southeastern Kau coastal area, including Ka Lae, encompasses the Wet Tropical Summer Dry zone. Another tropical zone found is a small patch of Tropical Monsoon. On the coast near Paauilo in Hamakua is an area that receives a great majority of its heavy rainfall in the hottest months of the year. The fourth tropical sub-zone, the Tropical Wet and Dry, lies along mauka Kona. It is characterized by wet summers and dry winters. Kona is the only place in the whole state which receives its high rainfall in the kau (summer) and not hooilo (winter). Finally, we arrive at the Arid to Semi-Arid Climate. From Upolu point to Keahole at the coast, moving inland above Kawaihae to Puako, through the barren lava fields of Mauna Loa and Hualalai exists a Hot Semi-Desert. Along the North Kona, South Kohala coast, from Kiholo to Kawaihae, right along the coastal strand exists a Hot Desert climate. With less than 10 inches of rain a year and hot, hot days, this zone benefits well from the calm, clear, and invigorating ocean waters. If not for the cooling ocean breezes that come ashore, these lands of resorts and beach houses would be a miserable place to be.
On one island in the tropics we have 10 different climate zones. Whether it's 10 of 12 or 10 of 13 or 10 of 14, it is still impressive and probably unequalled anywhere else on earth for an area of equal size. From Arid to Wet Tropical to Cool Temperate to Polar Tundra, our island is a land of all seasons. So if you ever tire of the same old torrid coastal weather at the coast, pick a zone, take a drive, and experience a climatic change. White Sands Beach the other day

Golfing with friends on the Kona Country Clubs Mauka Course

My son and I were doing our walk around the block the other day, and the neighborhood butterfly tree was full of butterfly's and caterpillars.
SOOOO - that means dad has to carry a couple of the caterpillars, and leaves home with us. We put them in his room and watch them transform, they are free to do as they please and once they are able to fly, he coaxes them on to his finger and takes them outside. Today was that magical day and I just felt compelled to share it with the world. Its just one of those awesome moments in your life, watching your 7 year old wake up to butterflys in his room, and have him coaxe them onto his finger, and then walk outside to let it go (he thinks he is a butterfly trainer) .
Happy New Year - hope everyone experiences a little magic in their day today.

I don't know if you read my last blog, but my December web hits were at an all time HIGH. Which is usually followed up a nice paycheck. The bad news was that December is the worst month I have seen when it comes to actual sales . Kailua Kona Home sales were off by < 65.% > from Dec 2007 sales- which we all know was not a very good year. and taking a look at the 18 properties that went onto escrow last month, 7 of them were either short sales or REO properties. And by the amount of recent showings, and phone calls, and the web hits, I would say that we should see a big increase in sales by February.

It means Happy New Year and it is pronounced "how-oh-lay ma-ka-hee-key ho".
I guess if your reading this - you made it - Heads still a little cloudy, not quite sure I made it - But I wanted to wish everybody a Happy New Year, Its about 80 degrees, sunny and a new year! We were headed out to a New Years party last night when I caught this cruise ship headed into the sunset - thought it should be shared with the rest of the world.

So whats your New Years resolution.
I will tell you one of mine - it has to do with getting rid of the goats yesterday. My wife has been getting on me about not cutting the grass often enough - I keep telling her you cant cut the grass in the snow - then she reminds me we live in Hawaii and threatens to take away my News Station privileges. Any way as joke, she brought home 2 goats last week - to do my job. Now I live in a community with lots of rules and regulations - and I know that farm animals are not allowed in here - that didn't help me at all. She said there names were Toro, and Honda, environmentally Green lawn mowers. So the first few days they were so nervous - they didn't touch the grass, so my wife went out and bought food - BOUGHT FOOD ! On day 4 they proceeded to eat my favorite plants, day 5 - my neighbor's favorite plants, day 6 - my lawn was pulled out by the roots - day 7 - they added a lot of excitement to our Friday night party - Goat Mugging ( I still haven't seen those photo's - that's a whole other story in itself) . Got to say it was actually fun! But they had to go - I rounded them up yesterday tied them down in the back of my pick up - and headed off to the ranch. Got to say I got a good laugh - I dropped my visiting mother off at her favorite beach - turned a lot of heads, 2 goats tied up in my truck, at the beach.
Her is a picture of Toro - my environmentally green lawn mower - going to miss you Toro.
So off I head to cut the grass
Aloha, and have a great day

I just don't know why people don't believe we have snow in Hawaii, but we awoke to Mauna Kea covered in snow on Christmas morning. We usually try to get up there as soon as the snow hits, but not on Christmas Day. The roads were closed anyway due to icy conditions. Actually that was the excuse I used not to have to get cold yesterday :) I prefer to stay in my warm 80 degree climate down here at sea level, my house sits at about 120 foot elevation, and Mauna Kea sits at 13,796 foot elevation - talk about a head rush when you get to the top, I am usually good for 2-3 hours, then we have to get back down to more oxygen. You can really see it in the kids attitude within that time period. They go from excited to cranky in 2 hours. You know its time to go down then.
Whats all this have to do with real estate - its a way to get you to my website - see the last photo on here - I have 2 great homes within walking distance of this beach - and they are priced at $299,000 - take your pick - follow the link below to my website for more information.
Here is your snow photo from Hawaii - this is up at the observatory's today - this link below will take you to the live webcams

This one below is from last years snow - once a year is enough for me :) - notice Mauna Loa in the background - also snow covered, you can barely make out the crater on the top
This is what I prefer - last weeks surf - about 2,000 feet from my house - I can hear them yelling from my home office when they catch a good wave
