Tasty Beverage Co. soft opening in Downtown Raleigh

Tasty Beverage Logo I know there are plenty of beer lovers in Raleigh, but I wasn't expecting to see all of them patiently waiting at the doors of Tasty Beverage Co. last Monday night. Manuel and I decided to stop by their soft opening to check the new business out. We are familiar with the the Raleigh Depot, as we frequent Tuscan Blu, one of the restaurants in this site along with Jibarra. We has seen the ad on New Raleigh Monday morning, so we thought a few stragglers like us would turn out.

We were there early as we were going through the area, but by the time they opened a good line had formed in the parking lot. I believe the store can accommodate around 50 people at one time, so they had to control access to the store to comply with local regulations. There was a lot of good buzz outside and expectation, as many people in the area have grown to love craft beer in the area, which is the Tasty Beverage Co's specialty. Tasty Beverage Crowd We finally got in, and had a chance to sample a couple of different craft beers that had been brought in by several brewers, including Stone, Anderson Vallye, New Holland and The Duck-Rabbit, among others. Even though it's at its core a store, full of racks with all sorts of imaginable beers for purchase, they also have a tasting bar where you can sample some beers on tap. For the soft opening, with the tasting you also got to take home a glass made by the brewer, which was a nice touch.

We were truly surprised, however, to see the lines forming all the way through the parking lot at the Raleigh Depot when we were about to leave. There were a lot of people curious to see what the new kid on the block had to offer. I really hope the business does well even in this tough economy. It's good to see specialty stores like this establishing themselves in the area, offering the city with more local options for people to chose from.

If you didn’t make it Monday night, put Tasty Beverage Co. on your grocery list as their selection may be the best in town.

Hillsborough Street revitalization continues with new planned Mixed Use Project

NC State Bell Tower

Good news came out today about a new mixed use project to be developed on Hillsborough Street directly across from the NC State Bell Tower. The project, which will be done as a partnership between Bell View Partners and The Bernstein Cos. will include a 125-room hotel as well as street-level retail and restaurant space. It is the latest project announced for the area, which has done a lot of work in the last year to re-brand itself as a desirable place for the greater Raleigh community. Other recent projects in the area include a $10 million dollar program to improve street level parking and traffic flow, the addition of bike lanes and bike racks for better transit options, and another recent development project that would add apartments, retail, healthcare, and a parking deck. All these projects are intended to improve the business and residential potential in the area.

The new hotel announced today will be on Hillsborough Street between Enterprise Street and Maiden Lane on an NC State owned 1.3-acre site. I'm looking forward to seeing more activity in this area, given it is a vibrant community anchored by NC State with the potential of growing and attracting other sectors of the population. The map below shows the area which will be used for this mixed use development.
