USA Today had an article Friday about websites the consumer uses to access information about homes of interest to them. The article listed 5 websites. Of the 5 I had heard of 2 of them. Being a Realtor I use MLS but found it interesting to learn about what the consumer uses other than Realtor.com. Here's some info on the USA Today listed:
Have you heard of?
Zillow.com - I had heard of and used zillow.com to compare the accuracy of information. I believe it to be fairly accurate. If you get in areas where there are varying amounts of data - your data can be skewed.
Redfin.com - Redfin actually sells Real Estate being an online brokerage. Redfin is not available in most metro areas.
Realtor.com - I think this one MOST individuals have heard of and is the most common out of the 5.
HotPads.com - New to me. Great website to find homes to Rent or to buy.
Last but not least...PropertyShark.com - get details about prior sales, demographics of the neighborhood, etc. PropertyShark.com is from M-F from 3 to 6 only.
It is true most home buyers start their search on the internet. There is a plethora of information on each of these websites but the consumer can spend hours going through it. A good realtor would be able to get you specifics in just a few minutes with just a few clicks.
The San Antonio parade of homes started yesterday at Cibolo Canyons. The event this year is featuring all "Green Homes" that range in price from 1.2 to 1.6 million. The parade of homes runs from 8/30 until 9/7. Realtor day is Tuesday AM 9/2 from 9-12 for all SABOR members.
The Parade of Homes is a fantastic opportunity to get ideas from some marvelously built & wonderfully decorated homes. Tickets are $12 at the gate or $10 at local Home Depot locations. For more information you can go to:
www.SanAntonioParadeofHomes.com
Here are the directions to the parade of homes for 08':

My family and I spent the weekend in Port Aransas at the 9th annual Ray Sekula saltwater classic fishing tournament. To be in the tournament is one thing but to get ready for it is another. Being this was our first year to enter the contest we were prepared with a capital P.
There's alot to do to get ready for a day of fishing ...there's rods to reel, bait to buy & trash to talk. Plans were made to host a huge fish fry with all the fish they caught I mean this thing was BIG, we were bound and determined to WIN, WIN, WIN, there were ego's at stake and fish to eat! Go TEAM GO!
My dad, boyfriend and his father competed in this "competition" together as a team. This 3 man team had been preparing for weeks so they set out to do what they came for - they set out to fish!
Starting out on the water first thing Saturday AM they left the tackle box back in the truck (after boating 25 minutes all the way out to their fishing spot) forcing them to go back and get it - you can't fish w/out bait right? Next my dad gets a tad sea sick, so with one fisherman down in our 3 man team it wasn't looking good. But, they move on, they find their perfect spot to fish & my boyfriend throws the anchor overboard to realize nothing was attached to the anchor. So now anchorless they charge on now letting my dad take the wheel of the boat, he will lead the fishermen to victory! uh-oh, what's that? The 3 man team is now on top of a sand bar. Just one more obstacle in this fishing competition and they are running out of time to meet the deadline for weigh-in! BUT after being out in the water for 7 hours with nothing caught worth saving they had back to shore, not even stopping by the weigh-in station they had back to the condo for showers, beers & a/c.
It wasn't all for not though, they qualified and WON the "Hard Luck Award" which they completely deserved since that was all they caught out on the water!
Here are the proud fishermen with their award. Better luck next year!
Here's a view of the Port Aransas beach this morning. The waves seemed a bit more fierce with Gustav coming close by.
Have a great labor day!
Confused? Yea, so was I. My parents did not raise their children with analogies so I was stumped.
This was a question my very inquisitive boyfriend asked me last night.
Boyfriend: "Are you the pig or the chicken????"
Me: "Um, I don't get it..."
Boyfriend: "Please tell me you have heard that story? It's been around longer than your mother..."
Me: "Huh?...are you calling me a pig?" .......................................................................................................
Ok, so why he asked the question is another story BUT I related it to Real Estate.
For those of you who haven't heard the story it goes something like this:
First off, why the pig and the chicken are hanging out together is beyond me, BUT, apparently they are friends, they occasionally hang out and make great analogies together. It's a beautiful relationship.
Ok, now back to the pig and chicken shenanigans... The pig makes the comment to the chicken that he only needs to make a contribution to breakfast a very meager contribution being an EGG...
The chicken casually lays an egg where she wants and then she can fly the coop, move on the next gig, say "Arriba Derchi" my friends and get the heck out of dodge.
The chicken can do this WITHOUT any COMMITMENTS or long term OBLIGATIONS while the pig on the other hand makes the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.
The ultimate sacrifice being his little pig life - The pig gives up his life leaving behind the bacon, the sausage, the ribs, the ham, the pigs feet all the way down to the prosciutto -
Everything but the OINK!
So, while the two of them together make a very delicious meal... his is not my point.
What does this have to do with Real Estate you ask? Well, I'll tell you.
I believe there are two kinds of Realtors in Real Estate - some are PIGS and some are CHICKENS. Agree?
Here's an example of what the pigs will do to get your business whether it be Buyers, Sellers or your referrals:
Have your best interest in mind Answer your calls and CALL YOU BACK
Educate themselves so they can educate you!
Not make it hard to do business with them
Be presentable Be professional Be PREPARED
Get out there and get involved to network like crazy
Work with you to make a contract work - regardless of the obstacles
The pigs are committed like crazy! They work for you Full-Time! Real Estate is their main gig! Selling Real Estate pays their mortgage, puts food in their children's mouths, clothes on their backs & hot-tubs in their back yards (oh, maybe a tad too far there).
They are COMMITTED - 100% - no doubt about it.
And then we come to the chicken realtor. Wah-Wah.
Maybe you like chicken, you believe it to be nutritious as well as delicious. That's fine but stay away from the chicken agents is all I am saying to you - you don't have to stay away from chicken itself.
What will a chicken realtor do for me you might ask?
Here are the CHICKENS:
Do they even have a cell phone to call you back?
Do they tell you about every possible home available to you? Or leave out the ones w/less commission?
Do they wait to put your home in MLS after taking the listing?
Do they truly listen to what you want in your new home?
Make you wait and wait and wait to get a response w/out an update, not even a crumb as to what is going on w/the negotiating
Hang onto the keys all weekend after you have funded - completely upsetting your buyers & frustrating you
Do they take the time to educate you on the home buying/selling process or rush you through the paperwork and tell you "it's under control"
Have I made my point?
Good. And, if you are wondering, I am a PIG.
I am proud to be a PIG in Real Estate.
To answer my boyfriends question, I am the PIG (isn't it obvious?)
