The new Tanger Outlet Mall in Deer Park is finally opening! For those living in the area, we've seen all the construction happening behind The Home Depot, the reconstruction of the road going to Stop N Shop, and a new traffic light on Commack Road.

For those of you who are not local, may not even be aware of this new mall. Everyone living in Western Suffolk, Nassau County and even the 5 Boroughs now don't have to travel out to Riverhead or Upstate to get some great bargains. The new Tanger Outlets @ The Arches is located off LIE exit 52/53 or SSP exit 39N.

All of this for the new outlet mall. The grand opening is.... October 23rd.

There have been concerns over the increase of traffic in the area and congestion on Commack Road from the LIE and the main roads off Deer Park Ave. from the Southern State. Being a resident of Dix Hills, right off of Commack Road, I'm nervous about the traffic. It's scary to think how crazy it will be this winter holiday. My husband is extremely concerned about his 5 minute ride to the train station increasing.

But still....how exciting! We are finally going to get some great stores close by (and at discounted prices, too!) Some of the outlet stores that will be opening are: Banana Republic, Old Navy, Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, Gap, Nike, Bath & Body Works - just to name a few.

The Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills and Melville is part of a Museum Pass Pilot Program. This great program allows district residents with a library card to reserve passes to:

American Museum of Natural History

Long Island Children's Museum

Old Westbury Gardens

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum

There are different guidelines for each pass, some good for one family, some for 2 adults and up to 4 children. These passes allow for free admission to the museums and discounts at the shops and exhibitions.

I've already used the pass for the Children's Museum in Garden City. My kids loved it! You do have to reserve the passes but I must say there's not much of a wait. I don't think many people are aware of this great program so I figured I'd get the word out.

**Please remember that this is a pilot program, so the guidelines may change. Or the program might not be around too long.. Take advantage while we have it.

I just received a very disturbing automated message from my son's elementary school. He attends Otsego Elementary in Dix Hills NY. The school just built a brand new playground this school year. It's beautiful and all the kids loved it. The message was to notify us that this very playground was destroyed earlier today by a fire. At this time, the assistant principal didn't give too much details. I hope that if anyone knows or saw anything regarding this fire that they will come forward and speak with the school officials. To the Otsego families-we are such a strong and dedicated community,I'm sure we'll have a new playground up for the kids in no time.
