Together, they built one of the most picturesque towns in the southeast, if not the country. Truly a great place for every phase of life.

Historically, Aiken was a retreat for Charleston residents escaping malaria and the marsh lands of the South Carolina low county. Aiken later became home to a "Winter Colony" as people of great wealth from the North flocked here to escape bitter winters. The town was also a popular health resort with a perfect climate combining warm, dry air, scented with pine and abundant spring water, which resulted in a healing combination. Wealthy horse enthusiasts soon discovered Aiken and brought their animals for pleasure and training. As they fell in love with the area they built extravagant cottages and stables that still survive today.

Traditions of the past still influence Aiken today. Polo is played on Sundays afternoon, from April to November, just like it was in 1882. Majestic live oaks and magnolia trees line the streets. The sound of cheering fills the air when the horse races take place in the spring and fall. The green of the golf courses that fill Aiken can be seen throughout the town. People smile and speak as they pass on the downtowns streets, which are filled with unique shops, art galleries, antique stores and a variety of restaurants.

Originally a winter colony of international sporting enthusiasts, Aiken is now one of the country's most important equestrian centers with facilities for trail riding, fox hunter, hunter-jumper events, race tracks, steeplechasing, polo, race horses and many other disciplines.

The largest urban forest in the country is at the heart of Aiken. Hitchcock Woods is 2000 acres with more than 65 miles of pine scented, sandy trails that are limited to foot, paw and hoof traffic.

One of the first places where polo is played in the U.S., with over 125 years of play in Aiken. Aiken is home to approximately 40 polo fields, many active polo clubs and has hosted the International Federation of Polo's Gold Cup.

Aiken isn't just about the horses. Aiken features world class golf, tennis, soccer, excellent shopping and dining, a variety of cultural activities, a regional medical center and the nationally ranked University of South Carolina at Aiken.

Year round play makes Aiken a golfers haven. There are several private, semi-private and semi public golf course in Aiken. Located 20 minutes from Bobby Jones' majestically Augusta National home of the Master makes Aiken the hot spot of for the world of golf every April.

Located on the Savannah River, Aiken is an ideal place for those interested in water sports. World class boat races are held on the Savannah every years. Langley Pond is the host to crew training for local colleges, clubs and during the Atlanta Olympics, some Olympic teams practice on the pond. The Edisto River (the largest black water river in the southeast), the Savannah River, many other steams, ponds and lakes are ideal for fresh water fishing. For those who wish, some great fishing salt water fishing is two hours away on the coast.

Hopeland Gardens is a park at the center of Aiken. Bequeathed to the city of Aiken, this fourteen acre estate was opened in 1969 as a public garden. Radiating throughout the gardens is a network of paths shaded under 100 year old live oaks, deodor cedars and magnolias. The lazy curves of the paths and garden borders lead visitors throughout a wonderful variety of experiences sure to please visitors of all ages. ON Monday night's, from May through August, Hopelands hosts a series of outdoor concerts. Admission is free but bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket to sit on.
