The Paddy Wagon Irish Pub - Richmond Kentucky

The Paddy Wagon Irish Pub - Richmond Kentucky

The Patty Wagon Irish Pub

The Paddy Wagon Irish Pub in Richmond Kentucky is centrally located downtown for business. Back in the day this building was the Rexall drug Store and also O'Reilly's bar.

Established in 2004 on Water Street...then to Main Street in 2006 for a year a few doors up from the new location. Then it burned to the ground in the middle of the night.

The famous fire is still one of Richmond Kentucky's unexplained mysteries.

Fire experts scratched their heads in puzzlement as to the cause.

"Hmmmm...It could be this...or could be that." Who really knows?

All that was saved that fateful night was an Irish clock, 1 sign and a few police patches.

Both owners, Greg Ferrell and Chuck Fields, teach criminal justice at EKU so the patches were a collection of police patches that patrons donated when they visited the bar.

I've been in bars that have unique collections of $1 bills(Tortilla Flat, AZ), neckties(Carefree, AZ) and bras(Key West).

The Patty Wagon Irish Pub

The idea for the Irish pub came from a trip to Ireland when they toured the Guinness Factory, Dublin and to the north...Belfast. Armed with information and local souvenirs Chuck came up with the décor for the inside of The Paddy Wagon Irish Pub.

The name of the pub has to do with criminal justice. Maybe Irish justice?

Th Paddy Wagon Irish Pub has a plethora of beer and ale for anyone's tastes or mood. The food is great...I had a generous helping of the fish and chips and the service was spot on.

There is a friendly atmosphere inside and plenty of room to park outside. Sip your beer on an outdoor deck and enjoy a Richmond Kentucky downtown view.

Live band entertainment is on Friday and Saturday. Hours are 11 - 1PM Monday - Friday. Saturdays 12 - 1PM.

Central Kentucky's Legendary Rock Fences

Central Kentucky's Legendary Rock FencesKentucky rock fences, picture by Lizette Fitzpatrick

Central Kentucky is world famous for Thoroughbred horses and endless miles of rock fences (Dry stone walls).

There are more rock fences here than any place in the USA. In Central Kentucky only 5 -10% of these 19th century rock fences built by Irish Immigrant stonemasons still stand.

These stonemasons passed their craft on to black slaves that became masters of the craft of building rock walls. This is where the term,"slave walls" came about.

Since I grew up here in the Bluegrass, this is what I had always thought they were. I had no idea that the walls originated with the Irish immigration to the Bluegrass!

Our walls are mostly built with local limestone that is plentiful in the fields. Once cleared and prepared for agriculture, the stone was easily used as border walls to pastures.

All the stones are laid free-handed with no mortar. My examples of Central Kentucky's legendary rock fences below were photographed on Spears Mill Rd. in Bourbon County, Kentucky. These walls are where the bridge crosses Stoner Creek.

Building these rock fences has almost become a lost art. Dry Stone Conservancy in Lexington, KY is dedicated to preserving dry-stone structures and training a new generation of artisans in their construction and maintenance.

Fayette and Scott counties have ordinances to prevent removal of rock fences in public rights-of-way.

This has protected many from disappearing forever. When they get damaged in large sections from accidents it is difficult to restore them and many just fade away.

I drive by these everyday and I have to respect the time that went in to design and building them from materials from our beautiful land.

Spears Mill by Lizette Fitzpatrick

Every now and then you see the bumper sticker that says, "Growth Destroys Bluegrass Forever". It is true.

I always laugh and tell people that I live in the land where time stands still... but I do see it fading away stone by stone. Sad that we all want progress and conveniences.

One day in the future all this will just be these few pictures I took on a sunny March day. A moment in time.

Kentucky ROCKS!

Come see it now.

Does My Earnest Money Get Held Until Closing?

Question: Lizette, I have a question about the earnest money I put down when we made our offer. My account was debited! Didn't you say it would be held till closing? Larry B.

Kentucky Homes For SaleAnswer: Larry B., this comes up all the time. Yes, you do get the earnest money back at closing, but it is deposited into an escrow account in a bank. Once deposited it stays there until I write a check payable to you and give it to your attorney at closing. He then will let you sign on the back and apply to your mortgage or you can just have the money back. So yes, it is debited form your account till you get it paid back.
