DBC 29 -Personal Property Inventory

DBC 29 -Personal Property Inventory

DBC 29 -Personal Property Inventory

Now that you have taken that big step of buying a home the next step should be to:

Take Personal Property Inventory

If your home was ransacked by burglars or destroyed by fire, you would need to be able to provide you insurance agent with itemized bills of sale (receipts) for your more valuable possessions? For most people, the answer is NO. You need to create a system so that you are able to say YES. In addition to creating a record-keeping system for bills of sale, a Personal Property Inventory- which provides a record of you possessions, will help you get the full value from your property insurance should a disaster ever befall your home. Here is a sample above of what you can create.

Take Inventory

  • You need to take inventory of your home, but before doing this, call your insurance agent to see what type of information is required, (and proof of possessions) under your policy.

  • Set aside an allotted time for this task. You can do in all in one day or one room at a time. It can take anywhere from a simple room approximately 5 minutes whereas a complicated room can take up to an hour. It may seem overwelming but think of it room by room.

  • Have on hand; a pen, pad of paper, ask your insurance agent for an inventory booklet, camera-with lots of flim, strong box
  1. Choose a room to begin with, example; the living room. Note down the major items you have there.
  2. After each item, note the year of purchase and price (don't know the exact price, you will have to estimate)
  3. Take a photo or videotape of each of the different sections of the room, show as many items as possible.
  4. Go to the next room, remember to check the kitchen, bathrooms, and hallways for items of value.
  5. Check all drawers, itemize and photograph valuables.
  6. Particular items of value such as jewelry or furs may need to be covered under a rider to your homeowner's or renter's policy and will also need to be carefully documented.
  7. When the film has been developed, order two copies of the needed prints. Arrange to have three copies made of the Inventory. (If you have videotaped, make copies of it as well.) One set of photos and an Inventory will be stored in your home strongbox: and the other set and an Inventory should be stored in a safe-deposit box: the third copy of the Inventory should be kept in your Insurance file in the file cabinet.

It is very important to keep your Inventory updated as soon as you purchase a new item.
