The Plaza Arts Center in Eatonton, Georgia has special memories for me. First of all it was my grammar school. I learned so much in that building. I attended 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade there. That was a LONG time ago.
New schools had been built by the time I was in middle school and my old grammar school sat empty for many years. In 1978 the First Baptist Church where I attendwas burned to the groundby an arsonist. I was only a child, but I was so hurt that someone would burn my church down. For the next 5 or so years my church met on Sunday Mornings in the Old Grammar school auditorium. In 1982 one beautiful Sunday morning we met there at the grammar school for the last time. The folks from the Presbiterian Church and the Methodist church left their services near by and lined the streets as we, the members of First Baptist Church of Eatonton, walked the 3 blocks down the street to our new building that still sits in the same location as before it was burned. They clapped as we walked by. I'll forever remember that day.
The old grammar school has now been converted to The Plaza Arts Center. It also houses the Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce. It's really a lovely place and its schedule is always filled with wonderful community events.
Last night they started a 12 week class/challenge on weight loss. The cost to register is only $35.00. You get your own personal coach, free meal plan and a support group to cheer you on. There will be money or prizes for the top achievers in the Challenge.

School is out for summerso kids might be playing, walking, bike riding and skate boarding in neighborhoods around Lake Sinclair. Happens every summer. And of course there is the occasional deer crossing that you must stop and wait to avoid an accident.
I also break for squirrels and possums occasionallyin my neck of the woods, but two days ago I encountered this coc-a-doodle-doo crossing the road. I stopped, I blew my horn and he just slowly was walking across the street not paying any attention to me. I even let my window down and snapped this photo and he just kept walking across the road.
I love my neighborhood and when choosing a place to live in looking at the names of the streets in the neighborhood I knew I might be likely to encounter many animals. You see I live on Possum Point Drive.

So I guess if you don't see any of these animals on the way home you can always have few and watch Animal Planet.

I was very disappointed there were no live cows this year. It was kind of sad to me. 49 years of cows stomping around the court house square and then bam, no more live cows.
So I did take a picture of the one HUGE cow that came to be a part of the parade. Mayfield is always a part of our Dairy Festival and on the court house square all day long you can get free milk, free chocolate milk and free ice cream. I guess for the kids this is the very favorite part of the festivities.
Seemed to also be a super big crowd this year and while I was attempting to get some good photographs people were mingling in front of me and I'm not one to push my way to the front, so I hope you enjoy these pictures I took of the parade.
The restored ladder truck was driven by my Uncle Eugene Hubert who is the Eatonton Assistant Fire Chief and if you missed my earlier post with the "firehouse" doggie in the window I thought he was really cute.
The couple in the convertible are this years selected Dairy Family and then the Dairy Queen and her court.
I wish I could have gotten a better picture of the Pilot Club FLoat. They had children dressed up as cows.
Now I'm not sure about the idea of a cow angle, but this church had one on their float along with Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus. It's one of those things you had to see to believe I think.
And there were lots of tractors, after all we were celebrating Dairy Farmers. And of course you can see we had a huge crowd. There were side streets filled with crafts, and street food. I ate my annual blooming onion. I as a rule do not eat fried foods, but just once a year I just have to have my blooming onion. And there was some awesome entertainment on the court house lawn in the afternoon.
So next year I'll be back again at the 51st Annual Putnam County Dairy Festival. Maybe I'll walk around and see the crafts during the parade to beat the crowd. :) And avoid the LONG line my daughter and I waited in to get our onion.
Hope to see you there next year too. The Dairy Festival is ALWAYS the FIRST SATURDAY of JUNE.

Lane Realty has been selling property on Lake Sinclair since 1985. I started to work for Jim Lane in 1992 ( I was the secretary and did not have my license yet). There are some great things about Lake Sinclair you should know... it stays full even in drought situations. There are dams at both ends of Lake Sinclair. The north dam connects to another lake built as a "holding tank" to keep Lake Sinclair at full pool. The power company moves about 1 to 2 feet of water back and forth on a daily basis through this dam.
