Last evening as we turned on the TV, we heard that Guy Fieri of the Food Network was going to visit a diner in Santa Barbara. That caught our attention. So we suffered through what seemed to be interminable commercials and found out he was reviewing Norton's for their famous pastrami.
We had driven by it many times on our way to the FedEX store. So we watched Guy eating pastrami with local Santa Barbara celebriites and everyone was praising the pastrami...Could it be we wondered, that we have a deli that serves pastrami and rivals our favorite place in Beverly Hills?
So today, we went on a mission to answer the question . We opted for the location closest to our home, it is bascially a stand, unlike the original which is a deli cafe. This is Norton;s second location and it is situated next to the batting cages field, 3 blocks from the ocean. They have outdoor seating, and since it was overcast and cold, we opted to take it home.
It was everything we hoped for, and more. We think it rivals New York delis we have had the pleasure to eat at, as well as our Beverly Hills deli...

If you ever find yourself in our corner of the world, and you are a pastrami lover, be sure to visit Norton's. Ron said that if we were still living in LA it would be worth the drive.
Cheers, Ron & Alexandra

On our last trip to Los Angeles, our foodie friend told us," you have to visit Penzey's. They are the new best store that has opened in Santa Monica. They have over 250 spices and herbs, and you can open jars smell the spices, buy them in small amounts." Our circle loves to cook, so how could we resist at trip to Penzey's? The picture above is a bumper sticker size magnet with their slogan.

Each spice or herb is arranged in vignettes/sections. We love t make an Italian style shrimp curry dish that we had in Tuscany, so we smelled every curry known to Penzey's and settled on one of them. Each display has a recipe or two to take home and try.

And then, we needed grey salt which flavors food with an extra dash of taste, when sprinkled on top of an already cooked dish, we knew we needed some. The salt section is artfully displayed and they have all types of salt from every salt producing country, including Himalayan salt crystals which are great for barbecues and on fish.
I walked out of the store with all kinds of goodies including long vanilla beans from Madagascar and very tasty cocoa for hot chocolate.
Penzey's has 40 stores throughout the US. If your marketplace doesn't have one, you can alwys go to their online store.
It is fun to be a foodie, Happy Saturday, and I am planning to cook some tasty barbecued ribs tonight!

We love branding and marketing, So when were out and about in Los Angeles last week, we delight in discovering new marketing ideas. This one was very special...How do you market a pretzel store...Very creatively, make a dress of pretzels. We absolutely love and appreciate all those people who continue to stray outside the lines and inspire us to new ways of thinking.

It is pepper season once again. They are beautiful to look at and add heat to many foods. Every stand had some variety of heat to offer!

And, there is one of hottest ones of them all, the habanero!

This morning at the Farmers Market in Santa Barbara, we bought mussels (at $4 a pound) that are harvested just a mile offshore. It is wonderful to have them again as for many years the waters were too polluted, As I stood in line waitiing in line for my turn, everone was giving recipes on how to cook them. Since these lovelies were picked early this morning, they can be cooked with very little liquid, a couple cloves a garlic, a touch of saffron, a bit of herbes de provence, and a jigger of wine.

For dessert we bought some seacoast strawberries that are at they prime now, They are grown in the fields close to the ocean and they are cooled at night by the sea breezes. They are small, juicy and very sweet, and no additional sugar is necessary...perhaps a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.
Wishing you all a wonderful Saturday, Cheers, Ron & Alexandra
