As part of my job, I ask all my buyers if they want a radon test. I hand them/email them the radon pamplet with all the information and tell them for $150 - they know whether their home has high levels of radon or not.
The pamplet does explain what radon is and that you cannot smell/taste it....
Repeatedly I hear "Is there radon in our area?" My answer (of course) is "You could have 7.5 in your home and your neighbor to the right could test at 0.3 and the neighbor on your left test at 34.9...there is just no guessing to which home has it.
BUT, I did find some information that might help a little:
Homes in the following Illinois counties that homes test above 4.0:
DeKalb County 51% test 4.0 or higher (average reading of 5.7)
DuPage County 47% test 4.0 or higher (average reading of 5.3)
Grundy County 44% test 4.0 or higher (average reading of 6.2)
Kane County 51% test 4.0 or higher (average reading of 5.7)
Kendall County 58% test 4.0 or higher (average reading of 6.6)
Will County 47% test 4.0 or higher (average reading of 5.6)

When the Irish dancers come stepping up Lockport Street, you know spring is here at last.
Our own old-fashioned St. Patrick’s Day celebration will soon be here. The 10th annual Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade is set to step off at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 11, and we want you there!
With special thanks to our returning primary sponsor Fox’s Restaurant and Pub. The Village Preservation Association and MainStreet Plainfield invite you and your loved ones to come out for the 2012 edition of this fabulously fun event.
This year, music will be more abundant than ever, with four bagpipe bands lined up to march in the parade, along with other musical ensembles and the always crowd-pleasing Keigher Irish Dancers.
Making its way through some of the historic neighborhoods surrounding the village’s retail center, the parade once again will be a kickoff for a full afternoon of fun in the downtown core, from the complimentary inflatable bouncer to the array of great restaurants downtown that will have their doors open wide. Also returning will be the downtown pub crawl, which celebrates some of Plainfield’s best taverns. Special prizes and cash drawings add to the merriment.
This is a complete Cuban style meal. Our main course is Cuban Style Pork with sweet marinade that has been slow roasting in the oven for hours. What sets Cuban-style pork apart is the use of mojo criollo, a highly seasoned marinade made up of tangy citrus juice, vast amounts of garlic, cumin, and oregano. The sides consist of rice cooked in black beans. This rice dish is not your typical black bean and rice dish It contains a generous amount of latin spices and bacon so you will definitely notice the cuban influence. Rounding this meal out is a fresh and vibrant Avacado salad with pickled onions. The tangyness of the salad complements the sweetness of the pork perfectly.
Two months after it suddenly closed, HopScotch & Vine is back with new owners, a new menu and new hours.
The goal is to create a "neighborhood place with a city feel," Vaughn said, and to come up with menu items you can't find in downtown Plainfield or elsewhere in the village.
To that end, she and husband Mike have developed a menu with their chef, Trinidad Z, featuring such specialities as stuffed burgers, five types of loaded baked potatoes and, coming soon, fondue, Vaughn said.
They have also opened a small store to sell wine and cheeses to go, she said, and they will be open for both lunch and dinner. Their hours are 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Vaughn acknowledges the size of the restaurant/bar, located at 24047 Lockport St., is somewhat limited, but that's also a selling point, she said.
"It's very small and intimate," she said. "We wanted more of a quaint feeling."
The centerpiece of HopScotch remains the lit-from-within bar top, which Vaughn said she likes because it's the kind of thing you'd find in Chicago or other large cities.
