Old Barney...An Anniversary Celebration!

No, we're not talking about the kids dinosaur, but the Barnegat Lighthouse!

It should be a sunny day at the Jersey Shore Saturday, October 11th for the 150th Anniversary of the Barnegat Lighthouse!

There’s been a great deal of interest in the Lighthouse since it was announced recently that the beacon would be lit again on January 1, 2009.

The Saturday celebration begins at 11am with a lecture on birds native to the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park at the northern tip of Long Beach Island!

There will be a fly over by the US Coast Guard at 2pm and a closing concert at 5pm by the Basement Musicians Guild Band! (Bring blankets and lawn chair.)

Throughout the day you can visit booths hosted by various community organizations and listen to bagpipers!

So come join the fun and learn the history of Old Barney, Ocean County’s most recognized landmark!

Books, Books and More...

Today, October 8, 2008, is the start of the Friends of the Library (FOL) Annual Book Sale in Barnegat, NJ. The sale runs through Friday, October 10th during regular Library hours. As vice president of the Barnegat FOL I’d like to say, “Come on down!”

This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Barnegat Branch of the Friends.

The FOL of the Barnegat Library is a non profit group established to foster public support for the resources and services of the Library.

The Friends, through its fund raising activities, also provides monetary donations to the Library for special programs and capital improvements. For example, we’re sponsoring a Halloween Parade at the Library and providing funds for the resurfacing of the front desk.

The Book Sale, organized by Murray Goldberg, has long been a staple in our quest to provide for our local library and better serve the community.

We welcome all members of the community, whether you live in Barnegat or elsewhere in the area. So stop by, ask about joining the Friends, or just find some great bargains on books (old and new), CD’s, DVD’s and yes, even videos!

A special thanks to all those who’ve contributed to this event!

The Barnegat Branch of the Ocean County Library is located at the corner of West Bay Avenue & Burr Street!

A Weekend of Chowder and Fun!

It’s the 20th Annual Chowderfest on Long Beach Island in Ocean County, over the Route 72 Causeway Bridge!

Seventeen area restaurants, each preparing over 200 gallons of clam chowder, will take part in this weekend long event in Beach Haven, at the Taylor Avenue Baseball Field at 9th Street and Taylor Avenue, just across from Bay Village and Schooners Wharf.

Chowderfest begins with the Merchant’s Mart, Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 am till 4:00 pm. It features end-of-the-season sales on summer merchandise, along with the sale of cups of a special clam chowder by US Foodservice. The Merchant’s Mart is free and held rain or shine.

Sunday is Chowder Day, You’re the judge! We get to vote on the best Manhattan (red) and the best New England (white) clam chowders. The winners get bragging rights for a year, and brag they do!

For the $20 price of admission ($10 for children 4-12), you can taste all the chowders. Me, I’m a New England Clam Chowder kind of gal.

Shuttle buses will be available from several designated parking areas…The Beach Haven School on Beach between 7th and 8th Streets and at the Veterans Bicentennial Park between Engleside Avenue and Amber Street.

The event is produced by the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce.

SEE YOU THERE!

A Great Way to Help in Tuckerton & Little Egg Harbor!

Are you looking for adventure while serving your country and your community?

If the answer is yes, you might want to investigate opportunities with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGA). You don’t need a service background, nor do you have to have sea legs.

I had the privilege of meeting several members of the USCGA, Flotilla 72 at an Open House for the Rutgers University Marine Field Station in Tuckerton recently.

I learned the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. It was created by an Act of Congress in 1939; the Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions, except military and law enforcement actions.

They explained that where ever your interests lie, and what ever skills you have, the Coast Guard Auxiliary can use your talent.

You can have fun learning new skills in the company of a very special group of volunteers. The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a number of opportunities, but the tasks can generally be divided into three service areas:

Recreational Boating Safety

The USCGA’s primary mission is recreational Safetyboating safety. They provide Public Safety Boating Education training and classes, voluntary vessel safety checks for boaters, visits with and educating local marine related industries, and staff general outreach to the boating public through boat shows and events.

Operations and Marine Safety

For those interested in boating, the Auxiliary offers intense hands-on training and qualification as boat-crew and coxswain. Those qualified perform regular safety patrol missions in their local area and support local boating activities on-the-water such as regattas, fireworks & fleet visits.

The Auxiliary also works closely with their active-duty USCG counterparts in many other mission areas, including environmental protection, safety inspections, security and planning, licensing and other vital roles.

Mission Support

officeIf being out on the water is not your cup of tea, the Auxiliary also needs people with leadership, administrative and technical skills (like as web site design, computer server administration, graphic design, photography and videography, communications, public relations/public affairs and personnel services). These volunteers support those USCGA members involved in the recreational boating safety programs, operations and marine safety missions.

Learn more about the opportunities available on the USCGA website.

Special thanks to USCGA Flotilla 72 members Alyssa Buxbaum, Tony Galfo, Bob Adams and Les Brown.
