Books In A Box, written by Stuart Stotts, provides insight into the life of Lutie Stearns and her quest to bring books to the people of Wisconsin in the late 1800's.
Lutie Stearns was born in Stoughton, Massachusetts on September 13th, 1866. In 1871, her family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended school and finished college. She began to work in the Milwaukee Public Schools. She worked in the Milwaukee, 13th Ward School for 2 years.
Lutie first worked as a teacher in a Milwaukee class room. She found herself responsible for 72 fourth graders and ironically - they only had one book for the entire class. So, she got creative. She realized with the help of some of her students, they could borrow books from the local library on an organized weekly plan. They soon had the resources that they needed. To raise money for additional school supplies, Lutie gave a lecture with a slide show on Germany. Parents, children, uncles, and neighbors crowded into the gymnasium of the school to watch her presentation. She raised $75.00 towards needed supplies.
In 1891, Lutie Stearns joined the newly formed Wisconsin Library Association. This Association was created to promote the growth of libraries to the State. At the time Wisconsin only had 35 free Public Libraries. Richard Hutchins worked with Lutie for many years to help create these Traveling Libraries. Each "Library" consisted of a large wooden box, with two swinging door on the front. Inside, the boxes held 30-40 books, magazines and a sign out sheet for borrowers to record their entries. The boxes were hosted by post offices, general stores and sometimes even private homes. Lutie canvassed the state for over 15 years, meeting town leaders and residents to build support for priceless "little libraries." The recipients were forever grateful. This system provided a resource they truly valued. After leaving the Library Association, Lutie traveled aroung the world sharing her experiences and promoting education.
While her extraordinary accomplishments speak for themselves. They take on a more profound meaning as the reader comprehends another fact about Lutie. As a child, she developed a serious stuttering problem that never left her. Her stutter studded speeches endeared her listeners to her. They became overwhelmed by her commitment to endure her speech frustrations to convey her critical messages to them.
Lutie Sterns, passed away in Milwaukee on Christmas Day, December 25, 1943. Her legacy of bringing books to the average person, was priceless contribution to the citizen of the State of Wisconsin.
A group of people seeking to preserve the history of the Greater Mount Horeb Area, assembled in March of 1975. They formed the Mt. Horeb Area Historical Society and incorporated with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in June of that year. This dedicated group developed a mission:
-to provide educational and entertaining programs,
-to participate in local and county historical events, and
-to establish an educational museum.
Their perserverance paid off! The museum opened to the public in 1977, in a space donated by the Village of Mt. Horeb. The Society boasted extensive archives and collections. Unwilling to rest on their laurels, the Society embraced the future, looking for ways to expand on their mission. The Historical Society acquired the former Gilbertson Hardware Store in 1996, to convert it into public museum space.
Today, the Mt. Horeb Area Historical Society enjoys strong local support, accumulating outstanding collections, featuring:
* Thousands of local artifacts
* School, church and regional government records
* Ten thousand photographic images
* Plat maps from 1860 to the present
* Extensive textile collection spanning 1840- present
* Personal writings, clippings, pamphlets,
posters, flyers, and books
The Society continues its valuable work by: servicing permanent and changing museum exhibits, maintaining resources for scholars, genealogists and restorationists, conducting school and public tours, publishing the "Past Times" newsletter on a quarterly basis, and offering historical programs and social events to the public at large.
Next time you visit Mount Horeb, be sure to stop by. The Museum is easy to find:
