One of the best neighborhoods in the Picayune area is Wildwood Subdivision, Carriere, Ms. I should know because I sold several hundred lots there when the subdivision was first being developed.
When I arrived there were no paved roads, no water, electric or sewer systems. Just miles and miles of dirt roads surrounded by thousands of pine trees, dew berries and blackberries.
The first home built in Wildwood Subdivision Carriere, Ms is 51 Fox Pen Dr. It was built by Calico Construction of Jackson, Ms and was sold to a young newlywed couple from New Orleans and New York whom are now my dear friends. Wildwood Subdivision Carriere, Ms used to belong to the Currie family who held it for investment for several decades. Before that it was known as Johnny Hawthorne’s wood yard and before that housed the conservation corps back in the days of the depression.
During the time of the Currie Family’s ownership the property was used for growing pine timber and was leased to the Boh brothers as a hunting camp that was known by the locals as The Fox Pen. That’s where the main road to the park from Bell Tower Parkway got it’s name.
When Wildwood Subdivision Carriere, Ms was being developed the original plan was to preserve over 350 acres of the property as dedicated green space for the use and enjoyment of it’s residents. I’m not sure if that plan is still in place but the original covenants called for conservation areas by both the developers and current owners.
The subdivision features a community park that is made available to all of it’s residents. The park includes a beautiful community center, a picnic pavilion, a lighted walking track and a fancy playground.
