Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church has worked for years in conjunction with Barbara Johnson and the Winnie Hooper Center to raise money for local families in need. Saint Patrick's uses the money to buy groceries that are given to families in Mooresville - groceries are purchased at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. One of the notable benefits of this program is that the food is provided to the families so they can cook a holiday meal in their own home. In addition, staple grocery items are provided as a means to stock the families' pantries for beyond the holiday.

Yesterday while riding home from Union County I remember that in the late 1970's there was a group of invenstors (or something) that wanted to build a parking lot in place of the Old Courthouse. The Courthouse was built in 1927 and operated until 1971 when it was replaced by a new, and at that time, contemporary building. There was such a firestorm of support that the Courthouse was saved and reopened with county offices in 1986.
This is the Courthouse today

What a loss this would have been for the County. It has been the backdrop for a hollywood movie and is so rich in history. Why do we think that we can improve of what our ancestors built?
It is that time of year.....Farmers Markets are opening and you should visit historic Waxhaw just outside of Charlotte on Hwy 16 (Providence Road). Local farmers share their produce and cooking tips.
Check out FitCity Challenge for more locations and recipes. Great resource for getting healthy.

WAXHAW FARMERS MARKET
On NC 16 North in downtown Waxhaw. 9 a.m.-3p.m Saturdays, 3.6 pm Tuesdays. Mostly local produce, herbs, flowers, eggs, honey, baked goods and goat's milk soap. WIC-approved market. Take NC 16 (Providence Road) to Waxhaw; market is on the right just before the railroad tracks and under the water tower. Look for tents.
Veggies and fruit picked that morning.....make it a family shopping event. Cooking suggestions from great southern cooks.....just ask.
