My Husbands Raccoon Story

This is my Raccoon Story

One night laying in bed on a peaceful fall evening - my wife and I heard a noise that I will never ever be able to describe. To the best of my ability I would have to say it was a mix sound between a dog and a cat killing each other. The sound was so loud I could not believe my neighbors were not up. After about 10 minutes the sound went away and I really thought my neighbors dog had been eaten by something. To make this story half way short and readable I will stop there and tell you it was 2 raccoons fighting. I found this out a couple days later when my neighbor saw the coons on my roof. I spent the next 4 days in Coon Hell! A raccoon was living in my attic with her 3 babies and I had to get them out before I went crazy. I found out the mother had dug a hole into my attic by way of my roof - shredded roofing material, and bent flashing so that she could have a home for her babies. R U Frickin kidding Me? The next 4 nights I was on a mission. The momma coon would leave her babies every night at about 9pm so first I blocked her from getting back in my attic and to her babies. Then I would wait for her to come back by sitting on my roof in war paint. She would climb over my backyard fence every night at 2:30 am. I could almost set my clock by it. She would then climb 1 of 5 gutters - depending on where I was situated on the roof and make a run for her babies. When she found out that I had a entry way blocked off she would try another and another. If it was not for my friend I would have had scratches and bites up and down my body. I can't tell you his name because I live in the city but he is skinny and brown and these metal things come out of it very fast. The coon did not like my buddy. My plan at this point was to remove the babies in the morning and everything would be over. Wrong! When I went to rescue the little ones they would hide in a special place that momma had made for them by chewing our house. I could not get to the babies. Plan B! I have always had trouble asking for help so plan B was to starve the babies. I figured all I need to do was to keep momma coon away for a couple of days and in this heat they would die. During this time a couple of Friends let me use their live traps to catch the momma coon. I tried everything and actually caught her 3 times and all three times she escaped. Live traps do not work on momma coons! After 3 days and nights of fighting off momma coon I finally asked for help and the pictures below describe how my neighbor saved me. Thanks Chris!

The Baby RaccoonsThis picture was taken on the 4th day. I had been up and on watch for 3 nights and 4 days and this would be my 4th night of being up. This is a picture of the outer soffit of my house. The babies would go from my attic to this area when they felt danger. We finally trapped them here and they had no where to go - they could not get back in my attic. The only way we could get them out of this area was to pry the soffit board "which they are laying on" loose and shove them down into a fishing net.

Outer SoffitThe Mother Raccoon had chewed a hole from the attic into the outer soffit big enough for only her babies to fit through. We boarded this area shut so they could not get back into the attic.

Outer SoffitThe Baby Raccoons climbed to the highest point of the outer soffit to avoid being caught. I would say it had to be 110 degrees with no air flow. We shoved them down the soffit board into a fish net.3 Baby RaccoonsMy neighbor holding 1 of 4 of my nightmares. Don't they look sooo _____! Do not say it! These things are evil and will rip your family and house apart. Just look at their hands and feet - not only do they have fingers but claws at the end. Raccoons are a house destroying machine. If you hear noises in your attic - Find out fast if it is a Coon!

Momma CoonThe only way I knew of letting Momma Coon know that her babies where no longer in my attic was to put them inside a cage within a cage so the mother could not get to them and also realize she did not have to tear my home apart any longer.

Moma CoonThis is not a very clear picture but this is a picture of momma coon trying to get to her babies. If you ever rescue raccoon babies from your house - never lock them inside a cage for momma coon to see. Momma coon worked all night trying to pull her babies through two cages. If it wasn't for me harassing her and the morning sun - she would have skinned them alive.

3 baby coonsThe next morning we took the babies to a shelter and I have not seen the mother since. Good night! I am tired.

Rees FamDrinking a beverage with my good neighbor and going to bed. I would like to thank all my Friends with their help and suggestions. I tried them all. Thanks Shawn for the traps and Joe for the great idea of playing Brittany Spears music in the attic. Yes, I did try that also but someone told me to leave it blasting for 2 days and they will leave. That was not happening! One more thing! If you think that your home owners insurance covers you for this kind of loss - you might want to check it out! I have a clause in mine that actually says damage from raccoons is not covered!

Regional Champs

I am not totally positive on this stat but I had heard that the Lansing pitcher (Brittney Lang) had 40 strikeouts in this 23 inning performance. I have not heard about the Basehor pitcher. The above picture was taken at tonights game for the Regional Championships. Lansing won by defeating Bonner Springs 8-5 and Topeka West in the Finals 5-0. Brittney Lang started pitching in the 3rd inning against Bonner and threw a No No for 5 innings and threw the entire game in the finals for a No No. She is incredible! Good Luck @ State Lansing!

Lansing edges Basehor in 23-inning softball thriller

Shelby Pierce of BLHS, Brittney Lang of LHS throw gems in pitcher’s duel

— It took four hours to decide frontrunner in the Kaw Valley League softball race on Tuesday.

Basehor-Linwood and Lansing played a marathon softball game that ended in the 23rd inning when Brittney Lang drove home the game-winning run.

The run gave Lansing a 2-1 win and control in the Kaw Valley League race.

The game will be remembered as much for the great defensive plays, timely defense and missed opportunities for both teams as the final score.

It also will likely be remembered as a pitcher’s duel between Basehor-Linwood’s Shelby Pierce and Lansing’s Lang. The two pitchers battled out of jams, recorded strikeouts and stifled opposing hitters.

“I have never been involved in one like that one,” Lansing coach Terry Cornett said. “Both teams had all kinds of opportunities to win the game. I hate seeing anyone have to lose a game like that.”

Basehor-Linwood coach Susan Mayberry said she was proud of the way her players battled.

“I think it speaks for itself if you are here as a fan of softball,” Mayberry said. “We are a team of fighters and are not going to back down from anyone. There was a league title on the line and we wanted to win it.”

Lansing scored first on a home run from Rachel Milnark that gave the team a 1-0 lead.

There was no score the next three innings. Basehor-Linwood tied the game in the fourth inning when Megan Rehm reached second base with a hit. She attempted to steal third base and then scored on a wild throw.

It was the last run to cross the plate until Lang’s hit in the bottom of the 23rd.

Both teams had opportunities to score at numerous points in the game. Lansing would advance runners into scoring position only to watch as Pierce pitched out of a jam. Often, she was helped by tremendous defensive plays behind her.

Pierce pitched out of jams in the 15th and 17th innings. Basehor-Linwood’s defense was stellar behind her. Infielders fielded line drives with ease. Outfielders made the routine plays.

In the 20th inning, Olivia Cowans made a diving catch near the left field corner on a hit that could have gone for extra bases. Each time that Lansing got a runner to second base, BLHS players tightened up defensively.

In the 23rd inning, Lansing finally broke through. After a leadoff single and a walk, Lang smacked a hit that brought home the winning run and ended the marathon game.

Basehor-Linwood players heaped praise on Pierce’s performance, calling it amazing the way she battled through each inning.

“You can’t tire when you are a champion,” Mayberry said of Pierce’s tireless performance.

Pierce continually battled against Lions batters during the game. She wasn’t thinking much, just trying to win a game.

“I think it was more adrenaline than mental,” she said. “I wanted to win and focus on every batter and do what I could to get them out.”

After the game she was a little tired, but she said playing 23 innings was a lot of fun.

“It was a blast. It is something you might not get to do more than once. Somebody had to lose,” Pierce said. “I think we showed we are ready to finish the season strong and ready for regionals. We can face anybody now.”

At the plate, the Bobcats had solid cuts against Lang who is slated to play division one softball next season. BLHS runners reached base in the 17th and 18th innings but were unable to score. In the 20th inning, Tiffany Jennings reached base on a single and advanced to third base, but failed to score as Lang pitched out of the inning.

Basehor knocked on the door again in the 21st inning when Rehm reached base on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She later advanced to third base, but failed to score.

The length of the game caused the second game to be postponed. Mayberry said she wanted to play the game, but it wasn’t her decision.

“You plan on playing two; the kids wanted to play,” she said.

It is not known if the game will be rescheduled. Basehor-Linwood plays host to Turner today.

“We played hard and played with guts. We played to win,” Mayberry said. “Thursday is a new day, we just move on. We have nothing to complain about tonight. I am proud of our softball team. The fans, community and school can be proud of our softball team.”
