Longs Peak

Greetings from Estes Park!

It's really cold here today, but sunny...and apparently a little windy at 14,000 feet above sea level! This is what Meeker and Long's Peak looked like on my way home from dropping the boys off at school this morning...Snow blowing off Long's Peak near Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park High School Band Program welcomes Student Teacher!

Greetings from Estes Park!

Chuck Varilek and the Estes Park Band program would like to welcome their student teacher, Leigh Thielen, to Estes Park.

Ms. Thielen is a senior in music education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and will be graduating in the spring after completing her student teaching requirement here in Estes Park.

Leigh grew up in Steamboat Springs. While attending school in there, she participated in basketball, softball, band, peer tutoring and was a member of the National Honor Society, graduating in the top 5% of her class. Ms. Thielens’s music education began in the clarinet section in 5th grade. She played in her high school concert band all four years, and joined the jazz band in her senior year. Leigh describes a unique experience as a Steamboat Springs Marching Band member: “I participated in the world’s only “Marching Band on Skis,” a Steamboat Springs traditiion! Every year in the Winter Carnival parade (in mid-February, I might add) the band would march down Lincoln Avenue on skis, playing their instruments.” Brrr.

Ms. Thielen made the decision to be a music education major late in High School. “I chose to attend UNC partly because of its great reputations for both the music school and education school, and partly because of the professors I would get to work with there. I am currently on my last semester at UNC, and will be graduating this May with a Bachelor in Music Education. I hope to end up teaching in a smaller school someday; many small
school band programs get very neglected, and I’d like to put effort into making them stronger,” comments Leigh.

Outside of school, Leigh enjoys spending time outdoors as well as listening to live music. She is an avid snowboarder, hiker, and rock climber. Leigh also volunteers at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. She will be playing with the Village Band and Big Band this semester, too!

Ms. Theilen comments, “I’m very excited to be fulfilling my student teaching requirements in Estes Park for the duration of the semester, and I look forward to working with the Middle and High School band students.”Leigh Theilen in clarinet sectional

Windy on Long's Peak today

Greetings from Estes Park!

After I dropped the boys off at school this morning, I couldn't resist driving out on HWY 7 to get a shot of Meeker and Long's Peaks with the clouds blowing across them...and the morning sun shining sideways across the sky. I was out of the car just long enough to take a photo or two, with the temperature right at zero and 60 mph winds...it was a little chilly!

Good Sam Santa Party

Greetings from Estes Park!

The 4th annual “Santa Party”, sponsored by my company, The Yellow Mailbox Real Estate Services, took place on December 21 for the assisted living residents. This is a special event, not only for the residents that enjoy our annual Santa Party, but for my family as well...my youngest son Chase wouldn’t miss being one of Santa’s helpers for the world!

This year, Scott Anderson and Ray Young provided the musical entertainment, with their rendition of “O Holy Night” bringing thunderous applause from both the residents and staff.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived just as Scott and Ray finished their performance. “It is so much fun to watch the residents’ faces light up when they see Santa,” remarked activitiy director Carey Stevanus. Santa and his helpers handed out cozy handwoven Mexican blankets as well as bags of goodies from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, ornaments for the residents’ Christmas trees created by Mary Nelson’s art students at Estes Park High School and Lisa’s cranberry-white chocolate cookies.

A special thank you goes out to the following friends: Paul and Marilyn Saunders, Scott Anderson, Ray Young, Jo at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate
Factory, and Tandy Brown of Orlando’s Steak House for helping to make this holiday tradition extra special this year.Good Samaritan Village Santa Party in Estes Park
