Create Simple Fun Traditions this Season

Time is flying by for the year and the "Years", our kids are getting older and we wonder how to capture some of the Holiday Spirit!

I believe one simple thing we can do is start a new tradition. What is a tradition? It can be as simple as always eating a certain meal Christmas morning or Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve.

It can be attending Christmas Eve Service at your church, or going to the same Holiday party every year.

The important thing is to do it together with your family, wether you are a small family, husband and wife, single with friends or family or have children. Share with the others that this is something you want to become a part of your Holiday Traditions!

If like me you think, I can't fit one more thing on my plate, then start this year with an easy one, tell your family," starting this year we will always have pizza and a movie on New Year's Eve!" And, each year you can build on those traditions, trust me they will look forward to it and will "own" it!

Enjoy Holiday Baking and Cooking, safely!

This is such a fun time of year to make memories with family and friends, cooking with children and grandchildren is special. Sharing our treats with neighbors, friends and family is also such a blessing to those who give and those who receive.

However all those memories will not be good if you are not careful, so here are some tips from Profesionals who can help us avoid accidents this holiday season!

Unsafe cooking practices are the leading cause of residential fires, officials said.

Here are some tips offered by Fire and Emergency Services and the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Do check food regularly: If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, remember to check it regularly; use a timer to remind yourself that something is on the stove or in the oven
  • Don't place flammable items near heat: Keep anything that could catch fire, such as oven mitts, wood utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains away from your stovetop, oven, or any other heat producing appliance in the kitchen
  • Do wear appropriate clothing when cooking: Never wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking; remember to stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch on fire and cool a burn injury with water until the pain goes away
  • Don't lose sleep: Never attempt to cook if you are extremely tired or if you have consumed alcoholic beverages
  • Do keep Fido and the kiddos safe: Keep children and pets at a safe distance away from the oven or stove when cooking
  • Do check your safety mechanisms: Install and maintain smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home

VERY IMPORTANT: If you plan to deep-fry your holiday turkey, chicken, duck, or anything else, remember to follow proper fire safety precautions. read all instructions for your fryer and completelythaw your meat before frying it.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Labor Day Activities in and around Snellville

Looking for fun things to do this Labor Day weekend? Here are a few things I have found:

Why not try The Farmers Market, located at 2342 Oak Road, on the Town Green, adjacent to Snellville City Hall? Although this happens each Saturday from 8-12 p.m., on the first Saturday of the month, which this will be, they also hold a Craft and Antique Village! So it's close, and free and sounds like a fun outing, and to top it off, you can get some fresh fruit and vegetables too!

FYI, this Farmer's Market runs mid May through the end of October!

A little farther from Snellville, are some other family friendly events, including, Arts on the Creek in John's Creek, Love the Lake in Acworth on Saturday and Sunday, with live entertainment and food, and other fun events.

For the book lovers out there; try the Decatur Book Festival, it has parades, food, book readings and more, and best of all, it's free!

For those looking for a few more thrills, how about The Powers Crossroads Country Fair? It runs the whole of Labor Day Weekend, and features Southern cooking, art, demonstrations of specialized skills such as blacksmithing and yarn-spinning, and it has live country and bluegrass music!

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy time with your friends and family and be safe!

Happy Labor Day Weekend to All!!!!
