Not Vermont, Not Montana, This is Autumn in North Carolina!

I've heard about the fall colors in Vermont, seen pictures of the Northwest, and lived in Upstate New York for my childhood. Autumn was always my favorite season (if you don't count Spring and Summer.) Living in San Diego for 16 years, the one thing I missed was the changing of the seaons, and especially the Fall .

However, this year the autumn color in Wake County is spectacular. Last year we were in the midst of a drought so our leaves went from green to brown to winter without much fanfare. This year we're making up for it in spades!

Since moving to Apex, North Carolina several years ago,Crowder Park has become one of my favorite Rocky the wonder dogplace to go walking. Whether it's with a dog, or just my husband and myself, it's always beautiful.

Crowder Park was built in 1992 on land donated by Mrs. Crowder for the use of a community park. It is situated on approximately 33 acres off of TenTen Rd.near Holly Springs Rd.  Park amenities include three playgrounds, three picnic shelters, a sand volleyball court, play field, restrooms, an outdoor amphitheater and a 3-acre pond with a boardwalk and an observation deck.

There are 2 trails for walking & jogging. The outer loop trail is 8/10 of a mile long and runs along the edge of the park. The Inner Loop trail is 3/10 of a mile and circles the pond, This trail takes you across the boardwalk and onto the observation deck where you can watch fish, turtles, herons, ducks, and sometimes even a beaver.

Although right now some of the trails are under repair, it's still worth going for a visit. Bring your dog, you'll meet many friends! Your kids will love the playgrounds (all made out of recycled material). Have a picnic under one of the shelters. Or just sit on a bench and enjoy nature.

For now, hope you enjoy these pictures.

Hemlock Bluffs- An Autumn Walk in the Woods ....... Cary, NC

Who can resist an absolutely perfect day in the fall to take a walk in the woods.  November 6 and the leaves are just at their peak of color here in Cary, North Carolina.  Yes, we know that North Dakota is having a blizzard today, and upstate NY has already had snow.  It's still beautiful down here in North Carolina and this year the autumn colors are spectacular!

With so many beautiful parks and trails to hike here in the Raleigh Cary area of North Carolina, it's a difficult choice as to where to walk. My husband and I decided on Hemlock Bluffs, off of Kildaire Farms Rd in Cary today. With over 3 miles of trails up and down the bluffs and through the groves of Hemlock trees, it was truly spectacular.

Of course I had to take my camera to share this with everyone. Viewing the slide show, you can't tell that the weather was sunny and warm, or feel the cool breeze.  And you'll have to imagine the smell of the fallen leaves and the sound of the breeze rustling the trees.

Hemlock Bluffs is a Town of Cary park featuring:

  • Unique stand of Eastern Hemlock Trees
  • Approximately 3 miles of trails
  • Scenic Observation Platforms
  • Excellent bird and wildlife watching opportunities Map of cary nc

The Stevens Nature Center inside the park was designed to compliment the natural surroundings of Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve. The Center provides information about the natural history of the area and the plants and animals that live in the Nature Preserve.  The nature center also offers a variety of nature programs for participants of all ages on a year-round basis.

Features include:

  • Nature's Niche Gift Shop
  • Hands-on educational exhibit hall
  • Classroom
  • Outdoor education shelter
  • Native wildflower garden

Green Building comes to Cary!

In my previous blog about the spectacular new home community of Terrington in Cary North Carolina, I promised there would be more information about how the builder, American Heritage Homes, is incorporating Green Building techniques and technology throughout his homes.

No, you won't see giant solar panels on roofs or geo domed homes.  In fact, the Green building techniques are so well used that you'd never guess these homes were so much more energy efficient than your typical million dollar house.

Jay Summers, builder and devloper of Terrington, provides his five objectives of Green Building for us:

1. Energy efficiency-  reduce the energy consumption in the house.

2. Resource Efficiency- more than using recycled materials- this theory involves designing the home's floor plan and placement on the lot to capitalize on natural light and minimize seasonal energy loss.

3. Water conservation- reduce water use in the homes- e.g.: waterless hot water tanks, optional irrigation wells.

4. Indoor air quality- use of efficient air exchange/ filtration systems, as well as humidity control  systems. Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) interior products- paints, finishes, wallpapers, etc.- are used to improve indoor air quality.

5. Lot & site development- preserving vegetation on the lot to control erosion and runoff is an example of the simple measures  that are taken.  More complex measures include the development of the neighborhood to capture nitrates before they travel to local streams.

AHH uses Energy Star rated products and practices to save you money and reduce greenhouse gases.

American Heritage Homes is a member of the Green Home Builders of the Triangle. This group is made up of 213 members of the Home Bulder's Association of the Triangle. The  Green Building program is based on the Model Green Home Building Guidelines developed by the National Association of Home Builders. Along with many building suppliers and contractors, it's members also include Olde Heritage Builders and Anderson Homes.

It's great to see more & more builders incorporating Green Technology right from the beginning in building their new developments.
