Cary Dog Park- Yes, a Park Dedicated to The Dogs!

Cary Dog Park - Yes, a Park Dedicated to The Dogs!

Halfway down High House Rd in the Hybrid while touring Cary NC I remembered a quite unusual park, perfect for a visit, Cary Dog Park. So I made on turn on Maynard Rd and just before Harrison Ave. near Golbold Park is the Cary Dog Park.

Pet friendly places like this park seem to greet you with open arms.  The assortment of painted fire hydrants lined the walkway, even the Dog Park Rules sign was adorned with puppy paws. Cary Dog Park is fully equipped; benches, shade area, and of course bags for, well you know, are all provided for the pet owners.Cary Dog Park - Linda Lohman

There is something about dogs that bring people together.  Dogs are a common links, something to share, talk about amongst ourselves. The people I observed greeted each other with a handshake and friendly hello.  The dogs chased each other around like old friends running free and competing for the loose ball.   I thought what a great place for someone who is new to the area.   Cary Dog Park really defines the sense of community Cary NC has to offer, even the dogs feel it!

I've Been Ahead of the Green Curve, Now Target and CVS are joining the GREEN Band Wagon!

I've Been Ahead of the Green Curve, Now TARGET and CVS have joined the GREEN Band Wagon!

I've been ahead of the Green Curve, Now Target and CVS have joined the green band wagon.  Remember right before gas prices sky rocked?  It was that fall that I decided to look for a new car.  I had been putting upwards of 30,000 miles on my SUV as a real estate agent and decided my kids were older and it was time for a sedan.  I started looking for something practical with good gas mileage.  I was on a lot and saw a Prius.  I was intrigued, no I can't., well maybe.  I sat inside, took a ride and decided my first instinct was right ....I couldn't.  I needed something bigger and let's face it, with a bit more luxury.  I spend too much time in my car to go without all the bells and whistles.  I was shown a Camry Hybrid.  Took a ride and loved it.  It has an electric and gas engine, GPS, leather, satallite radio, you get the picture.  I was on my way to going GREEN!target-green-reusable shopping bags

That year about February gas prices shot through the roof and everyone was selling  their SUV's.  Hybrids were on back order all over the country.  I couldn't believe I was ahead of the curve.  My cfriends were so impressed at how green I was being.

That same year reusable shopping bags began to show up in stores.  I figured I'd give them a try.  It took me a good month to reset my thinking and remember to actually bring them in to the store.  But darn it I wanted to go green!  Picture me taking my reusable shopping bags out of the trunk of my Hybrid.  How GREEN is that!!

I even bought a set of reusable shopping bags for my girlfriends for Christmas so they could be green too. I wansn't doing this alone.

Now TARGET and CVS have announces that they are giving cash back for using reusable shopping bags.  TARGET will offer $.05 for every reusable shopping bag used.  CVS will pay $1.00 on the 4th visit that you are using your reusable shopping bags.  In a pilot  market TARGET  saw a reduction of 58% of plastic bag use.

Block Scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

Block Scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

Block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools is a new concept for many residents new to Cary NC and surrounding areas.

Let me clarify what block scheduling is and why we have block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools.

  • With block scheduling instead of a student taking 6 classed each year the student will take 4 classes each term in 90 minute blocks of time.
  • Block scheduling allows a total of 8 classes a year resulting in 32 credits instead of the normal 24 credit opportunities over 4 years.
  • Students wanting to enroll in additional upper-level courses have that opportunity with block scheduling.
  • The school is able to offer more elective courses with block scheduling.
  • Students who "start behind" in middle school will have a greater chance to complete an advance course of study.
  • Block scheduling allows students more flexibility in their schedule when pursuing a long-term course of study ie: band, foreign language
  • Students needing to repeat a class will have ample time.

Block Scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

From a personal point of view, my two girls went through middle school and had one period a week on block scheduling. This allowed the student a chance to get used to the new schedule they would have in high school. In high school it was a bit of an adjustment, especially Freshman year, and especially first period. Like anything else the block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools is something they became accustomed to just like off-campus lunch. (That's a whole different blog.) In the end, the block scheduling prepared them for college and the time management associated with the longer classes. As a parent, I'm a fan of block scheduling in Wake County Public Schools

Wake County Public Schools offer a wide variety of educational opportunities from: traditional & year-round calendars, magnet programs, charter schools, and much more. Find out all you need to know about Wake County Public Schools when moving to Cary NC.
