Visual Acoustics - The Modernism of Julius Shulman

Guess what?? The coolest MCM documentary film is coming to Atlanta (after much begging, pleading and finally demanding)!

Visual Acoustics is the story of Julius Shulman the worlds most renowned architectural photographer. Narrated by Dustin Hoffman and featuring the work of every famous modern architect since the 1930's such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry.

"This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images."

Mid-Century Furniture: Classic Past = Hip Future!

Mid-Century Modern isn't so "Mid-Century" anymore. More and more Atlanta hipsters are realizing just how cool the furniture designs of Eames, Wegner, Platner and Saarinen are! There is a buzz in the Midtown-West Design district with some recognizable stores moving in such as KNOLL. Atlanta is finally getting some recognition and breaking through it's cliché of being a traditional Southern city.

Mid-Century design buffs can find fabulous new renditions of classic designs through stores such as Design within Reach, Knoll, Room and Board. But for those looking for some original pieces there are a handful of antique shops and dealers scattered through the city. Some of my favorites include: City Issue Atlanta, Kudzu antiques and Atlanta Antique Gallery

Have fun shopping and remember you are still allowed to negotiate price : )

Autumn in NORTCHREST - Atlanta's Mid-Century neighborhood.

SDC11024

There is something magical about Northcrest in the Fall. The sunlight that filters through the colored leaves has a warm glow that illuminates the the simple lines of the the Mid-Century Modern Homes a little bit differently. The gold and yellow of the poplar trees and the spicy reds of the Maples are reminiscent of a Van Gogh painting. People ask me why I live outside of 285? If you have ever been to Northcrest in the fall and had your breath taken away you would understand. They don't build neighborhoods like this one anymore.

The Absence of Fear

" Just don't think about it... right hand, left foot, left hand right foot.... just don't look down..."

"VANESSA. STOP!!! STOP!!" Someone was calling my name, just when I was a third of the way to the top. I thought they were supposed to be screaming my name and cheering me on not telling me to "STOP!?!"

" YOU FORGOT TO HOOK INTO YOUR HARNESS." Oh brother. This is awkward. My face was a deep shade of red as I climbed down the telephone pole. I had been so focused on just "getting it over with" that I had forgotten to hook my harness to the spotter on the ground.

I don't know about you but I am scarred to death of heights and climbing a 40 foot telephone pole to walk a 30 foot wire isn't exactly something I look forward to. I would prefer to have a root canal or eat duck liver (gross). But for some strange reason I had already paid a significant amount of money to take a 4 day health seminar that would require me to climb to the top of this god forsaken telephone pole.

The ropes course instructor looked me in the eye as he tightened my helmet and said. "Focus on your breathing. Keep your eyes looking up and forward. You can do this." So I took 5 deep breaths cocked my head up and started to climb. I never looked down. One hand in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. Completely focused on the task at hand. Then the most amazing thing happened, I felt a strength arise inside of me, a feeling of faith that I could DO ANYTHING or TAKE ON ANYTHING. It was the absence of fear, and it was amazing.
