After a long time of bad news it seams like the media, MLS market reports and our brokers may be right about the economy turning around. It's about time!

When you think of a cafe, what do you think of? Do you think about the food and coffee, or do you think about the people or activity that takes place there? One local cafe owner, Angela Snow, who toured for years as a professional ballet dancer based in New York, found that her favorite memories revolved around cafes. “It’s about the monumental moments in life”, she said. So she decided that she wanted to help create those moments for others. Life moves very fast, and we often don’t take enough time to sit down and have a great conversation with another person without the distraction of television, cell phones and Facebook. Those distractions aren’t what you’re going to remember at the end of your life. Angela now presides over The Manhattan Cafe, a place where those memorable moments take place, for the price of a coffee or sandwich. Personally, I’m impressed that, even having traveled more than most flight attendants while on tour dancing, Angela decided to come back home to Portland and start her own business. It’s a real testament to the appeal of the Portland community. The Manhattan Cafe can be described in looks much like many cafes, with its coffee machine, counter and tables, but it’s the personal touches that make this place special. For instance, the picture of Angela dancing that hangs on the wall, or the beautiful pictures of New York that decorate the whole room. The personal touches can also be tasted in the food and drinks. You’ll find a full coffee and espresso bar there. I don’t drink coffee myself, but I have heard theirs is fabulous. I drink protein shakes. I love protein, being vegetarian and an athlete, so this was the perfect solution to the, “What should I drink besides coffee” question… which is dumb because I’m going to a coffee shop on purpose but don’t want to drink coffee…anyway, you see my dilemma. Where was I? Oh yeah, the personal touches… since I’m a regular there and happened to stop by on my last birthday, they made me my protein shake as usual but stuck a candle in it and sang me happy birthday! How can you not love that! 503.998.4868 loren.castillo@exprealty.com

Alameda sits on a hill with excellent views of downtown, the Willamette and the Cascades, and boasts some of the grandest homes on the Eastside. NE Fremont Street, the neighborhood’s main east-west thoroughfare, is lined with genteel shops and restaurants, while the community’s side streets wind quietly around the hill, past stately cottages and expansive Craftsman homes. Alameda is perfectly poised between the amenities of Beaumont Village and those of Hollywood and is able to enjoy all that these commercial districts have to offer while maintaining a level or serenity uncommon in such an urban neighborhood. They have a Whole Foods, which is a personal favorite. One of the few inner Eastside neighborhoods that combine unobstructed vistas, proximity to amenities and upscale homes, Alameda is a relaxed, family-oriented place to live. Southwest Hills is located in what is known as Portland’s “West Hills” and is home to some of the grandest real estate in Portland, boasting an average home price of $718,700 according to Portland Monthly. The neighborhood is a fine balance of sophistication, open space (176 acres of park), privacy and proximity to the city. The history of the Southwest Hills is one of the more interesting and extreme of all of Portland’s neighborhoods. Being a naturally hilly area, in the 1800′s it was virtually impossible to travel to because of the muddy roads. The Portland Cable Railway gave access to the area in 1892. The train service originated in downtown Portland on 5th and Jefferson, and traveled to Canyon Road. It then went from Canyon to approximately Kingston Avenue, then to somewhere around about Fairview Boulevard. The construction of the Vista bridge led to dramatically increased access. By the 1930′s, the combination of amazing views and proximity to downtown caused the real estate values to jump from hundreds of dollars an acre up to several thousand. That trend has continued over the decades, which is why the Southwest Hills real estate values remain at the top among Portland neighborhoods. The neighborhood is also home to one of the City of Roses’ most popular destinations, Council Crest Parkwhich is thought to be the highest point in Portland at 1,073 feet above sea level. The area was originally known as Talbot’s Mountain, after its pioneer settlers. Gone are the cable cars that carried visitors to this scenic vista, but the wonderful views remain and the park is a great place to laze in the grass and watch the sun set. Downtown and Northwest Portland are easily accessible via Barnes Rd. and forest trails are only footsteps away in Washington Park.

Hillside is a genteel retreat high above a sophisticated city, while it’s breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Willamette and the Cascades and proximity to Forest Park (which boasts 5,170 acres) remind you of the wild, rugged nature of the city’s surroundings. If you want both nature and culture, Hillside is an excellent choice. The neighborhood consists of narrow streets and older homes with well manicured lawns shaded by old-growth trees, and an 8 minute commute to downtown. It is also home to one of the most famous pieces of Portland real estate, The Pittock Mansion, which is a 22 room estate that sits on 46 acres and is open to the public for guided tours. I’ve toured it a couple times and highly recommend it. The parks surrounding the Hillside neighborhood range from intimate to wilderness, and the proximity to unparalleled shopping and dining opportunities make Hillside a truly prime location. The neighborhood’s winding streets keep traffic to a minimum and the Hillside Community Center, designed by Pietro Belluschi, is a neighborhood gathering place, with plenty of room for kids to play soccer and basketball. A short drive, walk or bike ride lands you in Northwest Portland and the Pearl, where restaurants, bars and shops ranging from the comfy to the posh await. With its grand houses and spectacular views, Hillside ranks second (behind Southwest Hills) among Portland’s most expensive real estate with an average home price of $671,700.
